Gov't launches criminal probe in peanut recall
By Sharon Theimer And Ricardo Alonso-zaldivar, Associated Press Writers
2 hrs 15 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Responding to reports of shoddy sanitation
practices and inspections, federal health officials have
opened a criminal investigation into the Georgia peanut-
processing plant at the center of the national salmonella
outbreak.

The Obama administration on Friday pledged stricter oversight
of food safety to prevent breakdowns in inspections.

Officials say Peanut Corp. of America sold tainted peanut
products to food makers. At least 529 people have been
sickened as a result of the outbreak, and at least eight
may have died because of it. More than 430 products have
been recalled.

Peanut Corp. expressed its "deepest and most sincere
empathy for those sickened" and said in a statement Friday
that it was reviewing the facts to determine what happened.

3. "Lock them up and throw away the keys"
And the people who ran the FDA under Bush farmed out the inspections to a private firm in Georgia...so the problem as I understand it, was caused by the neocon idea of privatizing yet another function of the federal government, to some crony contractor.

China knows how to handle corporate managers who go on killing people for profit, after they know that their product is substandard/dangerous and they keep right on selling it anyway.

4. The old boys were getting rich
so who cares if people became ill or died. The neocons only want Chinese wages for workers but not Chinese laws for Management. They don't plan to sanction their own deaths by firing squad.

2. There's Is A Backlog Of These Things...
Just like the SEC and FEMA, you know other departments in the booosh regime were patronage GOOP campaign offices run by the people who they were supposed to be regulating. Many of these cases have been squashed or burried among all the other muck of the past 8 years. Here's hoping we see some prosecutions and make a statement here that the days of paying your way out of trouble or ignoring health and safety laws are over.
