Screw The Opera. Screw Art Museums. Screw Comedy Central.
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 10:18 PM by sandnsea
Jesus christ can people enjoy whatever their pleasure is without a goddamn guilt trip every friggin' day.

This may look like I'm calling someone out and I'm not. I'm commenting on the fact that this criticism happens every time there is some event that doesn't meet the culturally correct standard of the left.

Give It A Rest.

And if you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, then look around before you open your mouth.

Huh? Isn't witty or funny.

Comparing the overblown hype of the Super Bowl to the opera or art museums is reaching a bit, isn't it? When every friggin' media outlet bombards us with ads for Rigoletto or Madame Buttlerfly, THEN it might suffice.

25. Maybe we can take all those people that work in the Opera
you know, all the musicians, teachers, technicians and all those other folks that never make it to the Metropolitan and make them move out to farms and work for the collective good.

In fact, why don't we take all the people that have careers that you do not think are deserving of support and make them farm and build housing. Of course, you'll have to convince them that they're doing this all for the greater good, so you'll have to reeducate them.

We might just get this whole thing right if we can make everyone do what they should be doing rather than what they want to do.

Maybe if you take everyone's money away from them and redistribute it then we can all have a place to live, something to eat and we'll all just have to learn to like whatever cultural amenities are left over. Maybe only those that are commercially viable....or...maybe we can just take all those sponsorship dollars that flow into Commercial TV and redistribute that to feed, clothe and house the people.

If you're pissed off that some arts get a small amount of government support, then we can just keep cutting music and art out of the schools and eventually, you'll get your wish.

If you're pissed off that people spend their own money on these performances, then I can only say that I wish half as many people spent money in the concert hall than at sports arenas. But, that's just my taste and I like both the concert hall and the baseball park.

17. Sure do!
DU has a large and shifting contingent that loves nothing better than to jump on someone for expressing an aesthetic view that doesn't mesh with the approved paradigm, whatever that might be. In its most innocent form, this comes as preposterously heated criticism of whatever book/movie/program/game/pasttime that a given poster enjoys. In a more hostile form, it attacks the poster for shopping at Wal*Mart or for having the gall to be at the low end of middle-class-income.

For all the goodwill eagerly expressed by the positive contributors to this community, a too-large number of our fellow DUers simply can't wait to show off their righteous indignation.

Does that count as an opinion?

I KNEW in the dark chambers of my memory hole this had actually been done -- a sports announcer doing a play-by-play of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. P.D.Q. Bach (Peter Schickele) did it. As is all of his stuff, it's wildly hilarious.

36. This is a very obscure blog in the sense that I cannot tell if y'all are
being serious. So now citizens cannot enjoy/support the arts. We cannot go to the opera or the city art museum. Do we want these institutions to fold too; they are all already in trouble. I give generously to the dems and to the animal organizations and I support the ballet, the orchestra and the opera. I intend to continue doing so. I want them all to be there for everyone when the crisis ends, and so I intend to help the little I can now. To put people to work we need to solve corporate arrogance and greed not demean/dismiss the finest elements in our culture.

40. Ya Know, If the Superbowl Still Had *Anything* To Do With Football, I'd Be There With You
Having seen how games like Rugby & Aussie Rules Football, American football is the sports equivalent to dry-humping.

The Superbowl? It's about 11 guys on steroids trying to injure 11 others in spite of all the padding they've got on, and another 11 guys on steroids trying to move a ball down a field without being injured.

It's about advertisers who long ago gave up on creativity to sell a product and now resort to sophomoric jokes.

American football's not a sport, it's a business, and it has been for sometime.

54. At first I had no idea what the heck set you off.
Then I imagined some horrible opera accident, or your parents abandoning you are the Getty. And then I read it and you have a point, sort of.

I agree with you that we should be able to enjoy what we want to without others giving you a guilt trip. I will be going to a Stupor Bull party today, but mostly to hang out. I find american rules football to be boring. Small field, Tons of commercials. And too much padding. But that's me and I will keep my opinion to myself because my friends will be enjoying it. I prefer the world cup. Other's like cricket. There is no accounting for taste.

However you should understand that being a liberal usually means a few things such as openness to new ideas, inclusion, and exploration of the world around you. And so on our end of the political spectrum you will find many who have explored and found value in opera, art museums, symphony, jazz, poetry slams, and even hip hop.

When I say something like "I don't understand how you can like watching football," I really mean that I don't understand why they like it. Others may not mean that but don't hate all of us libruls because of the boorish behavior of a few. Bad behavior, it seems, is universal on all sides of the political spectrum. So take a deep breath and realize that others boorish behavior says more about them than about you.

In the meantime I give you some Mozart to enjoy, as presented by Victor Borge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGESFaMl84U&feature=related

Sometimes, we all need to blow off a little steam. Some laughter and fun in every day does not mean we don't care about those who are having a rough time. I think it actually makes us better activists -- after all, taking some time off once in awhile prevents burnout and overload.

I hope that you're doing something fun with your family today.
