What is it about the South that breeds such wonderful writers? I'm headed to Amazon to get this new one from Brown, whom I have missed so much:

1. Yes, what is it about the South?
I have often wondered why so many of our great writers come from the South. Maybe some DUers could offer a few theories.

And maybe a few other DUers could remember the wonderful literary heritage of the South when they start bad-mouthing that region.

2. I'm a big fan of short stories, which is how I came to admire Brown...
...and one of my favorite short stories of all time is "A Field of Blue Children" by Tennessee Williams. I think it was his first published work and appeared in the old Story magazine. I still have it, but the pages have turned yellow-brown and are quite brittle. I'm afraid if I reread it, it'll break.

3. A lot of writers from the South have said that it is the oral tradition of the long
pre-A/C summers (which can start in March and run until November) with the clan gathered around the front porch on the swings and rocking chairs... Others say it is just something in the water. Maybe it's like the Irish? Who knows. I don't know, but the South is a most literate place, contrary to popular opinion.

Personally, I tend to believe that it is a fondness for corn meal, pork, biscuits, red velvet cake, dogs and whiskey, myself.
