Pittsburgh schools on a two-hour delay Monday after Super Bowl

The superintendent of the Pittsburgh public school system has already decided that city schools will run on a two-hour delay on Monday, because the Super Bowl means a "late night" for the students and teachers. I can't decide if I should be happy about this or not.

My initial reaction is that if the adults of America have to be at work the morning after the Super Bowl, then these punk high school kids can drag themselves out of bed and get to that bus stop, too. The game should be over by 9:30 or 10:00 p.m., which isn't that late. Even some of the dorks routinely stay up until 11 on a school night.

And we're talking about a football game. It's not like we're witnessing the moon landing here. This is not like the Obama inauguration. This isn't even like the O.J. verdict. Get up and get your lazy selves to home room.

There may be a few hardcore young Pittsburgh Steelers fans out there who legitimately need that day off, especially if their team loses, and I respect that. But they can take the day off on their own. I went to high school with a guy who needed the day off of school after Francisco Cabrera singled home Sid Bream to beat the Pirates in the 1992 NLCS. 10. I wish they would move the game to Saturday

I know "Superbowl Sunday" is a tradition, but I am not looking forward to getting up for work tomorrow. Viewership will most likely be 90M+. That equals a lot of tired and hung over employees tomorrow. I can't imagine revenue would drop on a Saturday vs. a Sunday.

About half the people in my office are taking tomorrow off and working on President's Day instead. Hooray for good management!

The school's presumably been around for awhile. They may have found that students just don't show up on time after the superbowl.

If their attendance is extremely low for two hours that morning, what are their choices? I've had to deal with that when roads were bad here. We can shout "leave early, get here on time" til we are blue in the face, but wishful thinking isn't always reality.

On the last day we had severe weather here, when the bell rang I had 4 students in my room. There's no point in starting a new demonstration, or lecture, or anything meaningful in that situation. By 2nd hour I was up to full attendance, and those classes ran fine, but the first hour class fell behind those classes as I came up with other "enrichment" activities that weren't required for the curriculum for them.

Sometimes being a hard-ass just for the hell of it (or because you think it's The Right Thing To Do) just isn't the most effective way to run a school. I find it much more effective to run on a shortened schedule for a day than try to teach to a quarter of the students in a class (and then have to repeat the same activity/information the next day when everyone is there).

I'd wouldn't be surprised if they shut down the city for A WEEK ...

Of course, if the Browns won the Superbowl, I believe that you would see a smoldering hole where the city used to be ...

...they'd probably have the whole day off Monday, or at least the first two hours off.

And no one would complain too much.

I was a TA at Chapel Hill the year they beat Georgetown for the NCAA hoops championship. We all held classes Tuesday A.M. -- and most of us wound up talking to ourselves, and a few exchange students.

In Boston, where I went to high school, you could ditch the Sox' Opening Day at Fenway if you brought a rain-check to the Dean of Discipline. (Of course, then it wasn't sold out by Thanksgiving, and bleacher seats were $3.00....)

And we schedule a teacher in-service day during Fryeburg Fair week -- then all the kids go on one and the same day, rather than cutting classes patchwork-fashion for the whole week.

Bowing gracefully to the inevitable is a sign of wisdom.

Good that they've learned from it. I hope the suburban schools do the same.

It's awesome here today. The grocery store was filled with Steeler fans, nearly everyone in black and gold buying their last minute party food and gear.
