Finally saw "Shut up and sing"
God.

As an atheist/pagan/agnostic/taoist/whatever, I don’t use that term lightly. But every once in a while, you encounter something that shows you that spark of humanity that reaches toward the divine—that shows us both what we are, and what we are capable of being—and you look at things in a profoundly different way. This movie was just such a moment.

Of course I knew I would like it, given the politics, but the grit and heart and grace and poise and life and love of the people who lived through these events and hardships was not what I had expected. There are so many things I came away with by watching this movie, but first and foremost?

Women are powerful.

And it’s a power that doesn’t necessitate things being blown up or trampled. It’s a power that can raise children with love, that can endure a bitter and hateful torment, that can refuse to bow a head to hate, that can continue tenaciously down the road of life, regardless of what might lie ahead. And I don’t say this just because the Chicks did everything that they did, but also because, in the arena concerts, the most vocal of their supporters were fellow women. The power comes from sisterhood and support. I know many will disagree with me, but I don’t think a male band could have weathered this storm.

Maybe this is why conservative men are so often misogynists, fearful of women. They realize the power women can wield, and they don’t like it, because it isn’t a power that can be restricted and controlled by a select few. It’s a power that grows the more people who share it—a power that comes from people who work together for something they believe in and will overcome all obstacles in the end, because it’s not about the flashy explosion.

It’s about the long haul.

6. The movie touched me because of how the Chicks stood up for
each other because they knew they were right. The most touching scene was near the end when Marti said if Natalie wanted to quit, then they would quit and she and Emily would give up their careers if it would make Natalie happy. That's true friendship and Marti didn't show a selfish bone in her body. The movie is very good and you're right about the power of women - these women rock.

7. Reader Rabbit, what an excellent
review of "Shut Up And Sing"! I just saw it two weeks ago in our town's theater as part of the Art Center's fundraiser event.

The movie house was full and my girlfriends and I took up a whole row.. they all thanked me for inviting them and making sure they went! It was so powerful, inspiring, and a study in strength when your world seems to be crashing down on you.

Were they not prescient for documenting all that happened since that fateful night in London, 2003? And having such a cool manager, Simon Renshaw!

I ordered it from netflix and have it so I can pass it around to interested people who didn't get to see it yet. It's one the best historical docs of my time with music!

I went home and ordered "Taking The Long Way" and my friend gave me "Home"(the cd that the freepers were busy banning, burning, and thowing in trash receptacles like stupid lemmings) which I love and am listening to now.

I loved your take on it.

13. Blockbuster has exclusive rights to it.
I couldn't get it at Hollywood Video, which is where I normally go, since it is only two blocks from my house. But I did a search on blockbuster.com, and all the stores near me had a copy.
