4. Are any not made in Asia now?
Zenith was the last remaining company with any production in the US, but I'm pretty sure all that moved to Mexico a decade or more ago.... If they have any operations in the US at all (which I doubt) I suspect it is just to try to lay claim on "Amurican made" but they really are not.

15. If there was an American manufacturer of TVs left...
... then even though it would be designed in America and assembled in America, the component parts would come from all over, probably mainly Asia.

It's pretty near impossible, even for the Chinese or America, to assemble a very complex electronic device and have absolutely everything sourced from that one country. The oil to make the plastics. The metal. The semiconductors. Everything. Going from raw material to end product these days ... it's a truly global market.

I know of one definite non-American manufacturer of TVs that is definitely not Asian in origin, and you would LOVE to have their equipment. Bang and Olufsen. They're Danish.

Mark.

18. Bang and Olufsen sells audio equipment here....
I'm not totally sure whether they sell tvs in the US... Bose tends to squeeze them out in most audio markets here.

19. I can't think of any consumer electronics manufactured in the US anymore
even iPods are manufactured in China. I think "Made in America" is a great idea but it's about 20 years too late. What exactly IS made in America anymore? What appliances? What clothing or white goods? What tools or hardware?

Of course, I DO know where there are still some Pet Products proudly Made In The USA (shameless plug).

9. From CNet....about Vizio. Great TV by the way.
We have had people who come in comment about the great picture.

http://news.cnet.com/The-secret-of-Vizios-success/2100-1041_3-6203488.html

"Vizio's strategy essentially revolves around trying to have the cheapest TVs in the mid- to high price range. Acer has used a similar strategy to move up rapidly in the PC business. Additionally, Vizio tries to project itself as the company that can provide better and more personal service. TVs are packaged with poster-size service guides. It also offers free in-home support during the warranty period and a "no bright pixel" guarantee for the life of the product for many TVs. Bright pixels are faulty pixels that become a pinpoint of light on a TV's display.

The Costa Mesa, Calif.-based company started as a consulting firm in 2003. Wang had worked at several Taiwanese LCD makers and decided to branch out on his own. One of the company's first engagements was helping Gateway put together its 42-inch plasma TV system, priced at a then-startling $2,999. Comparable systems at the time sold for upwards of $6,000. Although Gateway's momentum in TVs petered out, it enjoyed a surge of sales and attention with that low-priced TV in 2002 and caused other manufacturers to cut prices."

Amazing picture, good price.

14. Us too
Great picture and very affordable. Our Costco recently had 32" Vizio LCDs for $389. We didn't need another TV - but what a bargain.

16. AmTRAN Technology of Taiwan is a major contract manufacturer for Visio
DisplaySearch has released its Q3'07 Quarterly LCD TV Value Chain Report, which states that 23% of the 20.1 million LCD TV units shipped in Q3'07 were made by external OEMs such as TPV, Jabil, AmTRAN, Quanta, Proview, Vestel and Wistron. Many LCD TV brands outsourced 100% of their LCD TV set manufacturing, such as Grundig, HP, Polaroid, Vizio, ViewSonic and Westinghouse.

See http://www.evertiq.com/news/read.do?news=9593 for a description of contract manufacturing.

They may use more than one contract manufacturer, and some of these have factories for manufacture or assembly in several countries.

Most likely, there is heavy Chinese parts content, with LCD modules from Taiwan.

There is little or no set manufacturing or assembly in the US.
