Baby soaked in beer found outside nightclub
A seven-month-old girl has been taken into custody by New Zealand's child protection services after police found her soaked in beer outside a nightclub on Sunday morning.

Sergeant Howard Clement says the child was in a parked car with her 18-year-old father while the mother was in the club in the city of Whangarei, north of Auckland, about 4am.

Police were notified by two members of the public who saw the child's clothes and nappy were drenched.

Mr Clement said the father was arrested for disorderly behaviour.

1. Is it against the law to spill beer on a baby?

4. Common sense is just lost on some.
Maybe neglect and child endangerment would be better. It was 4AM, baby soaked in beer. Father age 18, mom inside a club. Some people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

"Baby DRENCHED IN BEER!!"

Nighttime lows are around 70. At least the child was not left alone.

21. OK, at the risk of being jumped on by some...
I have to admit that when I saw the OP title my very warped mind immediately got an image in it that amused me.

I can't help it...it just happens.

"Beer soaked baby found outside nightclub"

For a split second (or maybe more) my mind played its sick little movies.

And "Baby drenched in beer" sounds sort of like a recipe. Like "Asparagus drenched in wine vinegar"..."Beef drenched in Cabernet"

Like I said, it's something I can't help...it just happens. My mind has often gotten me into lots of trouble.... :(

Although I do fully appreciate the seriousness of what happened, once I get past the initial encounter with the title...

one of my first thoughts was, recipe.

Especially the way the OP showed up on the list on the front pages of this site.

My brain is waaaay too literal for its own good sometimes...

2. I don't understand why these kinds of human misery stories are offered for discussion
We know the human condition is in a state of misery and cultural decline. There is no shortage of dead babies, murdered children and wife-killers on this planet, and indeed in your and my neighborhood. What possible purpose is served by illuminating a light on another of these incidents?

7. What I find interesting
are the people who think an OP is a dumb or useless topic but they just HAVE TO comment on it.

Isn't that a sort of oxymoron?

Personally, I like the distraction these types of stories provide. I am tired of worrying about the economy, Obama's cabinet picks and the war on Afghanistan. So a break for a silly story suits a need. And I know I am not the only one.

:hi:

14. You are indeed not the only one
I also enjoy reading about the exploding Freeper heads and their stupid opinions...I like a bit of diversion sometimes from the political stuff.

I even like the silly OPs.

Why on earth some people have to come in and shit all over someone else's topic just because THEY think it's not relevant or it's too uncomfortable for them to deal with, or whatever reason...well, it's just beyond me.

If they don't like the topic, it's way easier to just hit the "back" button and leave it alone without making a snotty comment. No need to build up their own little egos by pronouncing it "Stupidest topic ever" or asking "Why is this being posted here?"

because I've asked the question before and I don't think anyone who does it has ever been able to answer the question....

Why?

Why bother leaving a snotty reply if you don't like the topic or subject matter?

Maybe they just can't control themselves...

33. The incident itself isn't funny...
not at all.

It's really very sad, and those parents need serious help.

I think what people are finding funny is the title, which a whole other subject.

Haven't you ever laughed at an inappropriate time?

I've seen people laugh at wakes and funerals.

That doesn't mean they're disturbed or uncaring or ghouls....

35. Something that just occurred to me...
with regards to calling this an "abused" baby.

That's a very serious allegation.

As far as we can tell right now, there are no real signs of abuse. Neglect? Maybe. Inappropriate parenting choices? Definitely.

The one positive here is that those parents chose to take the baby with them rather than leave it home alone.

And unless a physician examines the child and finds evidence of physical abuse, we can't say for sure that there IS any abuse going on.

Like I said...neglect...maybe. But neglect and abuse aren't the same things.

40. I agree
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 02:48 PM by Control-Z
Such young parents may have put themselves into a situation that was dangerous to the child, but not with premeditation. At eighteen, it would be possible to find oneself drunk without all that much alcohol. There was certainly poor judgment shown, equating to negligence, but not necessarily abuse.

41. Unless they can't wash the beer off
I think you are being a bit over dramatic.

The baby has been taken from the parents and is probably just fine by now.

This appears to be a case of neglect rather than abuse.

can't wash off emotional abuse.
