If you are collecting unemployment, are you getting any call backs

6. How long have you been out of work?

I have twice had periods of two year's duration where I couldn't get arrested, let alone get a job, but I still got up every day and looked for work, mostly by sending my resume.

But I had no choice - I have a family to support. How can one stop looking for work if one has a family to support?

I can't even keep track of how many resume's I've sent out. That part I don't mind doing. It's going into a physical place and asking. They look at you like you're insane.

8. illinois one has to fill out a work search paper

which means one grabs a big phone book and write down all the places you`ve been...wink..wink. i`ve been on and off work for about ten times in the last few years and they never asked for my job search. they are way to busy to worry about job searches when there is`t any jobs.

Government and corporate policy often dictates that even if someone is already selected for a scarce job, it must be publicly advertised. My guess a few years back was that even in good times, most job annoucements in the Washington, DC area are crap formalities designed to grease someone in from the inside.

So the trick is to utilize your personal and professional contacts to win the job before anyone knows its going to be offered. Be very, very nice to those folks, for they're likely to be the ones who get you in the door.

I've had pretty good luck running the temporary job circuit. At least in those places you have a chance to see how a place is operating from the inside, and it won't be long before you can tell at a glance which offices are good to work in and which ones are about to fall to pieces. If you don't burn your bridges along the way, you can build up a pretty decent list of contacts to hit up later on.

14. In the last 14 months

My wife has been laid off twice., It took her 8 months to replace her first job with one last summer, and then lost that in Sept. She has been looking hard since (though fortunately she worked just long enough at the job last summer to requalify for Unemployment). She has been putting out applications, and has had a couple of interviews, and has had some encouraging preliminary interviews recently.

So my advice - keep looking, don't give up and don't panic.

So I don't want to commit to a full time position. Seems like you can't do what you need for yourself anymore.

Here's my situation

All my good contacts are in northern NH
I'm staying 45 miles south of there
I have to move from my house in April and I'm heading for MA but I have no idea where I'll find a place.

Unemployment does not care about that. They just want you to find work.

because even if you move to another state you can still file for unemployment

16. My state's unemployment department waived the work-search requirement because

I'm in school right now. When I graduate, the job I get will pull in substantially more tax revenue than the job I had before.
