Dennis Miller gets a 4th show to fail with
the list so far:
ABC-cancelled
HBO-cancelled
CNBC-cancelled
(not mention fired from MFN)

And conservatives tell us liberals don't get shows because of ratings. Yet this perpetual failure keeps getting chances by sucking up to power.

----
The Dennis Miller Show
In January 2007, Miller signed a deal with Westwood One to launch a three-hour talk radio program. <14> The program is scheduled to debut March 26, 2007, and will air live from 10am to 1pm Eastern Time, with re-feeds from 1pm to 4pm Eastern Time and 4pm to 7pm Eastern Time. <15> The show is set to debut on 80 stations, most of which are owned by Salem Communications. <16>

1. Dennis Miller! The next Rush Limbaugh.
Or Glenn Beck.

23. The next Limbaugh? Well, not really.
First, Miller is not an ignorant idiot. Second, Miller is willing to tone down his routine when in the enemy's camp -- during his latest visit to The Daily Show, Miller's breathless Bush-butt kissing was noticeably absent. And, finally, Miller's lack of success with the knuckledraggers sets him apart even further from Limbaugh.

Glenn Beck is a second wave neocon brainless jackass. In five years, no one will remember his name.

Can't believe it myself, but it's right there on the website.

John made short work of John Bolton just last week--Dennis will be a pushover.

11. Jon likes Dennis...
...appreciates him for his acerbic tongue. Maybe its a comedic fraternity sort of thing. I doubt Jon will go after him unless Dennis starts something.

18. I get the feeling they've known each other a very long time
and that's why Jon tolerates Miller's getting a man-crush on Bush after Bush gave him a ride on Air Force One.

21. I'll skip that one, then.
I have no interest in defiling my television with the likes of Miller. He is pathetic rather than funny, and I don't want to see his face any more.

5. The problem with Miller isn't his ideology, it's that he has only one schtick.
He's a psuedo-iconoclast who hides behind grandiloquence, making some people think he's more insightful than he is. He's not as smart as people thought at first, so now he's just boring. Combine that with the fact that he now tries to be an "iconoclast" who supports the icons, and you've got an blowfish without a reef.

6. I HATE supposed "independent thinkers"....
...who conveniently never criticize their own side. Jon Stewart made fun of Al Gore a little the other day and ruffled some feathers at DU. Fair enough. But it will be a cold day in hell before Miller makes fun of even the most ridiculous Republicans--like Katherine Harris, for example. That woman was a walking, talking punchline, and yet Miller spent an entire month making fun of John Kerry's botched joke.

12. Accept no substitutes
I can make obscure literary references and use multi-syllabic words in the same sentence, but no one ever gave ME a talk show.

Bet my ratings would be higher than that pseudo-intellectual smarmy ass-clown.

7. You're not going to believe this, but
I once heard Dennis Miller say something funny. It was close to two decades ago, and I can't remember what it was, but I recall that it was funny.

As far as I know, that was the only example.

26. IMHO, Miller's problem is not a lack of comedic talent...
... it was his conscious choice in 2001 to come out with his nose in Bush's tush coupled with hateful diatribes about Clinton. And, as mentioned in other posts on this thread, you cannot force comedy in a given context with no escape -- you've got to let the funny stuff happen and simply observe it.

14. The Denis Miller Irony, and the source of his failure.
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 01:18 AM by whoneedstickets
The only people who might appreciate his obscure pop-culture references and semi-intellectual witticisms can a) see right through his persona and b) are too bright to share his political views. Those who do share his views, prefer humor on the level of Larry the Cable guy and can't quite get comfortable with his high-brow pretensions. Like a Venn Diagram where the circles don't intersect, his style of humor and his politics define a null audience.

true for me. But may I humbly add that he also bangs the very limit of my creep-o-meter, in terms of who he is as a person. There's something beyond smarmy about him that truly repulses me.

15. Didn't Bush ruin 4 business ventures?
Failing at four professional endeavors must be the key to Republican success and might be some kind of gauntlet or test they have to fail at in order to determine whether they are worthy of bigger and better things in the Republican Party. If Bush had a department of comedy in his cabinet, Dennis Miller would make the perfect Minister to head it up.

19. the lowdown on salem communications- dennis' new boss:
from wikpedia-

Salem operates mostly four strategic radio formats: Christian talk and teaching (which airs on AM in some markets and on FM in others), Contemporary Christian music (which airs on mostly FM stations), conservative News/Talk format (which airs on AM stations), and Christian Teaching (which also only airs on AM stations.

i wonder if dennis has started drinking heavily yet?

that guy has GOT to have some SERIOUS life choice regrets.

20. Miller was funny when he had liberal writers.
I don't think the HBO show could be considered a failure, it ran for a pretty long time, and I enjoyed it(my enjoyment isn't why it isn't a failure). Almost every show ever created has been cancelled. Miller's HBO show ran from 1994 to 2002, and I don't know the story of its demise. At that time he wasn't the delusional neocon that he is now. This was before the old Miller was put in the conversion chamber, and more importantly, this is when liberal writers would still do material for him. Since that time, he has had a string of failures.

28. Salem Says It All
It's amazing how people here are so outraged at Faux Noise yet know little to anything about this company. This is a commercial "enterprise" that owns hundreds of stations across the country that are the home to some of the biggest hate spewers and serves as a part of the Repugnican propaganda machine.

Salem makes most of their money from "dollar-a-hollar" preachers and other "xtian" businesses...the money from that venture goes into their "Patriot" network of stations that air goons like Michael Savage, Bettamillion Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham and others across the country. Ratings mean nothing to this country as most Salem stations are bottom feeders as long as Dobson's money keeps rolling in as well as "sponsorship" by major Repugnican corporate contributors.

Miller found himself another sugar daddy in Edward Anschlinger...Salem's owner and big time booooshie ranger and Repugnican big wig. Here's hoping Miller got a nice big check and advance for a show that will be heard by few and drain hard-pressed cash from that company's deep pockets.

30. The Big Problem W/ Miller Is He Sucks
He used to be funny when he was telling jokes for people who were smart enough to get them. But since now he's catering to rightwing, neanderthal's, he doesn't realize their too stupid to get most of his obscure references that made him funny to begin with.

36. Yes... this will fail too...
Miller will have to dumb his vocabulary down a lot so that his listeners can understand him. He'll be on for three hours... that's a lot of fller to come up with once the talking points have been dispersed. He'll have an audience for ten minutes then lose them with his contrived vocabulary.
