Is it safe hunting done with respect for the environment and are the animals used for something? Because I get the whole food chain, bad things happening with overpopulation thing. Look at what humans have done in the absence of predators to control our population. I'm okay with that sort of hunting.

But if we're talking about rolling over the habitat and leaving destruction in your wake as you lean out of your SUV to take a shot at a member of an endangered species who you're only going to use as a trophy, then I'm totally against it.

That said, I DO have an emotional, visceral "ick" reaction to people who kill anything for pleasure. I'm sick of "sportsmen" rationalizing it by yammering on about their love of wildlife and the great outdoors--well, use a fucking camera, then, if that's what it's really about.

I'm kind of OK with, "I'm hungry and I love venison" as a motive, though. It's honest at least. And venison IS tasty. I'm not a vegetarian so I don't have a high horse to get on (I won't eat horses, though.)

We have taken over the land and the habitat that these animals use, and have run off many species of natural predators -- without hunting we would have excess deer, etc. in suburban and farming areas, getting hit by cars, damaging crops, eating ornamental plants (by houses, etc.) that are poisonous. Out of control their numbers would get to a point where their own food supply is compromised, especially if there is drought or a hard winter.

We already see some of these effects in many areas WITH hunting. Imagine if these animals were unchecked in their population growth.

Hunting helps to thin the herd, and in the long run keeps deer (etc.) AND PEOPLE from suffering. Again I do not and would not do it myself, but if others want to do so I don't have a problem with this. It would be nice if all meat is used, and many hunters either use it themselves or donate it to a food bank or other needy program.

But if you're going to eat it and put meat on your table, I see nothing wrong with it. I've told my son when he got his first pellet rifle, "If you shoot a squirrel or bird, you'd better have a recipe for it, because you're gonna eat whatever you kill". BTW, I think it would be more interesting and fair if the animals were able to hunt down humans and shoot back as well. It would definitely level the playing field.

I have no problem with hunting for food. I eat meat, I have pets who eat meat. In nature there are predator and prey species (and quite a number of species who serve both functions in the food web). If human hunters can model themselves after other predators and take only what's needed, it doesn't upset the balance. And if an animal is killed for food, I don't have a problem with making use of other parts at the same time (hide, antlers, etc). In fact, it would be wasteful not to.

I vehemently oppose hunting that's strictly for trophies, pelts, or "sport," or that puts pressure on threatened species.

Hunters can be a strong voice for conservation, since there have to be wilderness areas to sustain prey species. As long as they don't get into the mindset of wiping out natural predators as an imagined "competition."

but i support it. I don't hunt because I am not comfortable that close to so many people with firearms. I have to drive a car to get to work, that is about all the risk I need. I do not need to hang out with an assortment of strangers carrying high powered weapons to eat, so I choose not to do so.

While I would take no joy in killing things, as an ecologist, I understand the role hunting plays in the replacement of other extirpated top predators, and have no problem with it.

I fish, I don't hunt. But I have a lot of family who do.

When I fish, I feel bad for each time I catch a fish that is too small to keep per regulations, because I hate that I hurt it. I release it quickly. I never take more than we will eat that day. I'm usually on a camping trip when I fish, so it saves me having to bring as much food (and the accompanying unbiodegradable trash that I must haul out when I'm done). My sister and brother-in-law went trout fishing for their honeymoon -- rented a nice cabin near the river that time, but they usually rough it.

My sister and I have also both been to deer camp several times, and while I have not killed a deer myself, nor has my sister in my presence, I've helped with processing the meat -- and when we knew someone who could tan the hide, removing the hide for that purpose. Believe me, I know that what was taken was not wasted. We ate well while we were there, and took our trash out behind us, along with meat that went into several family freezers. If there was an exceptionally nice rack it may have been saved for a trophy, but I only recall one. The antlers were removed from several in my presence but those were for people who used antler for other purposes than trophies.

Sporthunting -- killing animals that are not edible -- to me is a bit different.

First, you have to remember that what people will eat varies from place to place. I have eaten squirrel, cooked with dumplings. I've eaten rabbit. I've not eaten bear, but I know people who have. I have certainly not eaten moose, but that's because they don't live here. My father has eaten and killed both, but will not kill either anymore after having raised rabbits for Boy Scouts and having kept a pet squirrel. I've lived way out in the country, where you might have to shoot a bear and kept a rifle for that purpose. But the local bear wasn't aggressive apparently, she broke into a friend's cabin out off of the grid while he was asleep, and he woke up and yelled and she went right back out.

There are also big cats in that area. We found evidence that a large cat was eating our chickens, but could never catch it in the act. (Our free-range banties decided the three Tyson refugee roosters someone dropped off at our place were quite handsome, and they were very good at hiding their eggs -- the weird genetics of the combination produced over 100 chickens of various colors, sizes, and tempers.) After we moved and took the buffet with us, a woman was mauled to death by what most suspect to be a large feline due to tracks. She was slightly mentally retarded and may not have realized that a large cat wasn't as friendly as the smaller ones she adored, and so may not have run as quickly as someone else. She certainly did not know how to operate the rifle even though it was just above the door in the house.

I personally think that animal needs to be trapped and relocated if it is ever found since it has harmed a human, or killed as with any dangerous animal on your property if it's the only way to defend life or livestock. I know how to do it, and also how to save the hide if it is something that can be used by someone. I think anyone who spends a great deal of time in the wilderness or lives in a very untamed area should know how to operate a gun -- a rifle at the very least as it is the most common thing on hunting trips -- even if they do not own one. If you've been able to find a use for a part of an animal that you've killed, even if that use is a tanned hide, I think that is better than leaving something useful to rot. I was present when a large snake had to be killed, and the hide was preserved for a guitar strap.

Hunting animals merely for trophies, however, is not something I like. I am not that fond of fur, but if leather is from the beef industry, I am fine with it as the animals are being eaten as well.
