1. What's the hook? Are they just hoping 3/4 of the workers will take them up on it?
Will they retain their pensions? When (or if) business picks up, can they be called back to work?

On it's face it sounds good, but I want to know the details.

3. Would you give up your living wage job for $20,000 and a car?
That shit ain't going to go very far. The only people I can see this being a deal for are those that are about to retire and the lowest people on the totem pole who are in line for the next layoff.

7. Maybe YOU CAN, but I sure couldn't! Maybe you should quit your job and
start teaching the rest of us how to play BJ. I'd pay to attend classes!

6. From Detroit Free Press
http://www.freep.com/article/20090203/BUSINESS01/902030360

Those eligible for retirement get an added incentive to take retirement. Those no where close can take the cash and walk away. It's a gamble. Ford Motor gave lower seniority folks $100 grand to take a walk. After Uncle Sam took his they had about $45 grand. Since one doesn't know the future it's hard to know if the cash is worth it. If you lose the job anyway with no cash then you lose. If you could have kept your job and made a lot more, but took the cash you lose. Yes, it's a gamble.
