My guess is that part of the vetting process is that a team of accountants pour over your financial records looking for anything bad. Some accountant probably said, Hey Tom, did you ever pay taxes on this gift that someone gave you, and that was probably the first he knew of it. He then immediately filed amended returns and paid it.
