Mikulski (D, Maryland) CSPAN 2--an amendment to give tax rebates for new auto purchases? WTF?
Damnit. People without jobs or in fear of buying cars don't need "one more incentive" to buy a new car, esp. if it's only $1500 on a 25K car (and not even a hybrid at that--it could be an SUV for the purposes of this amendment). What the hell is this doing as a Dem amendment? Take a good negotiator to the dealership (or be one), do you research ahead of time, and you can shave that much off just with solid bargaining skills. Poor decision on her part, I think.

2. explanation
until sometime in the 80's you could deduct both auto loan interest and credit card interest. It just depends on what you want to encourage or discourage through the tax code.

5. I wish she'd retire and van Hollen would get her seat. Hell, I'll take her senate seat.
I'd barely have to adjust the chair.

That's it - VOTE for CAPTAIN HILTS - the chair won't need to be adjusted!!!

7. I'm not fond of inflating the demand for the sake of demand
We need better, more fuel efficient cars. Build those (hybrid, ev), it's for the better of our country in many ways. But just creating incentive to buy the crap that is still out there to inflate the demand is a mistake. Drive by any car lot. There are dozens if not hundreds of cars sitting there doing nothing. Hoping for a buyer. This isn't Toilet paper on the shelf, or two liters of soda pop. These are multiple tens of thousands of dollars worth of product and natural resources that are being built for the 'hope' that it gets sold. Time to start building things that require that 99% of the population either needs to take a loan out on, or needs to save up over many years on a per order basis. Can't just build a million cars to find out that only half a million in demand exists. Fundamental shift.

Homebuilders. Don't build an entire community then try to sell the houses. Build them when someone actually wants them.

I guy just may have to wait a few weeks to get something nowadays.

Just a thought.

9. like Boxer last month proposing tax incentives for people buying hybrids
The economy's in the shitter, tons of people don't have the money to eat, and yet these wackaloons want to redistribute taxpayer money into the hands of those well-off enough to be purchasing the trendy car du jour? Insanity.

10. I still think that at least it serves a purpose
To get off of foreign oil, and to move our country forward, basically fighting back against the big oil lobbyists that have been keeping us from doing what would actually be good for the future of our country. However, I do think that it will go that way anyway regardless of tax rebates.

11. I Don't Have A Problem With Incentives For People To Buy Things.......
Cars - well yes there are a lot of cars just sitting waiting to be sold - and people are not buying. If an incentive can move some of that inventory off the lots so that the manufacturers can put people back to work by building more cars - that would be good. I agree that the cars that will be built need to be more hybred's or fuel efficient in order to free us of this oil dependency. There are still many people out there that have jobs and have some money and need a car that if offered an incentive - might get them to the car dealers.

Another incentive I would like to see is for energy efficient windows, doors, furnaces that can be replaced or retrofitted in houses. If a person would like to replace all their windows in a house to more energy efficient ones - an tax incentive might just be the thing to get them to move on this.

Again the incentive would be two-fold - 1. energy efficiency for the house/reduction in heating & AC costs for the consumer; 2. stimulating the sales of windows, doors, furnaces, AC units - creating a demand so that manufacturers can put people back to work to make them - manufacturing jobs.

We need to be more creative in job creation. If we can get a two-fer advantage - all the better. Maybe some of those people without jobs or that are sitting home may be able to become employed again - if a tax incentive provides demand and manufacturing has to kick in.

12. What do the car companies lack, capital or customers?
That rebate might be the difference between a three year loan and a five year loan, thus generating a little more interest from folks who don't want to be in debt for the rest of their lives because cars tend to conk out before the loan is paid off.

She's crazy like a fox.
