What's it like to volunteer for HRC (Human Rights Campaign) or the Democratic party?
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 03:13 PM by TwixVoy
I have decided I want to volunteer with some organization to try and make things better for others.

I have been doing some thinking and some moderate research on the net and I have narrowed who I would like to volunteer for to be either the Human Rights Campaign or my local county democratic party.

In the past I have supported both organizations in the form of cutting them a check... which unfortunately isn't very hands on.

I am wondering for those here who have volunteered with HRC before and their county democratic party what it is like? I don't have many skills, but I am very dedicated to something once I start with it. Also I am somewhat of a shy person so I don't know how good I would be dealing with the public/strangers on a regular basis in that kind of volunteer role. Is that necessary?

Also I work full time on a variable schedule. (schedule changes from week to week) Would it be difficult to volunteer with such a schedule?

Thanks for any info. The hardest part for me right now is deciding which organization to volunteer for, and thinking about what I could do when I do.

1. Can't speak for your local Dem Party, as they are too variable
I have seen a lot of local party organizations that out conservatived the Republicans.

As for the HRC... why? Their primary reason for existence seems to be to collect donations and then use the money to lobby against transgender rights and equal marriage, all while supporting Congressional incumbents with lousy records of supporting our issues over openly gay and lesbian challengers who better fit the HRC's alleged purpose.

If you want to be more involved with the Democratic Party and gay issues, see if there is a local chapter of the Stonewall Democrats in your area. If not, I am certain that there are food banks, shelters or volunteer visitor programs who would swoon to have your help.

2. I haven't volunteered
much with HRC but I have a lot of experience volunteering and managing volunteers for different groups.

The problem with local parties is that sometimes they're good but often they're not. You might end up doing work to support candidates who you disagree with strongly. If you don't know the chair of your local Dem Party you might want to find out about him/her and their priorities first. Plus, some local parties aren't very good at using volunteers during non-election years.

I usually suggest that people volunteer for a specific candidate they like or for an issue group they care about.

Since this is a non-election year, HRC will probably have more work for you to do than the local party. Most groups are used to dealing with volunteers who have limited time. Before you talk to them you should think about what unique skills you have and/or what you enjoy doing.
