I told Mrs R to "mark my words" about that "octuplet mom" the other day:
I said the ONLY explanation for her having the fertility treatments / embryo implants was that she was looking to get book and / or TV deals.

Boy, was I right.

36. Can the doctors diagnose autism in a new born? I heard she had
lots of doctors at the delivery (c-section) and it is costly and that some of the babies could have brain damage, etc. Since she already had six children, that doctor should not have performed the procedure. Just my opinion but there should be more accountability for these procedures.

My wife and I have been trying. Indications are that my wife may not be able to get pregnant the traditional way. So hopefully we will be able to get help with fertility treatment someway but now this woman will cause the whole practice to be questioned.

My DH and I went through infertility and fertility treatments. It is physically and emotionally difficult. We were lucky enough to finally get pregnant with twins. They just turned 7.

I hope you and your wife are able to find success. It is very worth the challenge.

And I agree that these cases make it more problematic for everyone else.

25. I read that she had a shitload of fertilized eggs
in storage, and used up the first six. Then she got the last eight installed.

Somewhere, there is a physician who is in fear for his license. Any M.D. who did this - to a woman without a man in the picture, no visible means of support, and SIX KIDS AT HOME - should lose his license and be forced to pay for the upbringing of those eight kids.

Which may be what the mother had in mind all the while.

Maybe she's secretly in love with the fertility doctor, and this is her diabolical plan to trap him into marriage?

OK, I've lost my mind. Ignore me.

Benjamin Franklins, that is. Money, money, money and more money. She saw the history of family having multiples getting free houses, lifetime supply of diapers, food, vans, TV shows based around them, etc, etc, etc. She just figured she found herself a good old-fashioned ticket to easy street and decided to ride it as far as she could.

45. I read in one of the news articles
that there may have been more than 8 to start, but only 8 took. If you think about it...if you wanted eight to actually take, would you start with more than eight for a better chance of having 8 take? I honestly have no idea. I wonder what the odds are of having 8 out of 8 implants take. It all sounds crazy to me. Nothing like gambling with human life.

When the media goes all haywire over this kind of nonsense, it reminds me of how goofy the news was just before 9/11.

That's what this baby story makes me think of, and I get nervous............................

was how quickly she so obviously began spinning the story. She claimed the mother was a professional, employed full time, before she had the octs. Everyone has already heard the truth about her employment, of lack there of. Does she really think people will forget that and buy her lie?

26. It's an extreme way to go about it and could have been fatal.
and if there is any justice left in this world, that fertility clinic will have its licenses yanked and will close. The doctor will also have his license yanked.

It was a fluke that both the woman and all 8 babies survived. Our bodies are simply not designed for this kind of multiple birth with its attendant severe stress on all organ systems, not to mention the sheer physical stress of becoming that huge.

That clinic needs to be stopped before they kill somebody.

As for the mom, I hope she does get the deals she's looking for. She's going to need a high income to help provide for all those children.

46. Octuplets mom is not getting showered with gifts
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Where is the lifetime supply of diapers, formula and baby wipes? The free van? The brand-new house?

Women who give birth to six, seven or eight babies are often showered with dazzling gifts from big corporations, local businesses and strangers. But that is not happening with the Southern California mother who delivered octuplets last week.

The news that she is a single mother with six other children — and that all 14 were conceived by having embryos implanted — seems to have turned off many people, and companies are not exactly rushing to get publicity by piling on the freebies.

(snip)

A veteran Hollywood publicist said Suleman's handlers have their work cut out for them in trying to win public sympathy for her.

"I think it's a calamity," said publicist David Brokaw, who has handled crises for celebrities. "I don't see, the way this is shaped, how you can say much about it in terms of something favorable."

Makers of diapers, formula and other products would probably want to steer clear of her, Brokaw said. He suggested she lie low for now and concentrate on crafting an image as a responsible parent.
