Senate to Americans: Get out and buy a new car you worthless bums!
Senate votes to give a tax break to new car buyers
By DAVID ESPO, Associated Press Writer David Espo, Associated Press Writer – 48 mins ago

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted Tuesday to give a tax break to new car buyers, setting aside bipartisan concerns over the size of an economic stimulus bill with a price tag approaching $900 billion.

...

Sen. Barbara Mikulski led the successful effort to allow many car buyers to claim an income tax deduction for sales taxes paid on new autos and interest payments on car loans.

She said the plan would aid the beleaguered automobile industry as well as create jobs at a time the economy is losing them at a rapid rate. "I believe we can help by getting the consumer into the showroom," she said.

1. We need jobs to do that - bring the jobs back from China, India, etc. and revoke all HB1 visas
Then we'll have jobs and be able to buy cars.

4. Oh great! Why don't we just outsource all jobs? Would you be happy then?
Why don't we continue to give our professional jobs to others so CEOs can pocket the difference?

14. Let's start with HIS job. (how else does reality get to him?)
I am not ignoring his point (or him for that matter) but we've got to get real: There IS no shortage of domestic labor, as was claimed a year ago. There certainly isn't now.

7. huh? No, blame companies that outsourced jobs to India and China
and imported people from the same to lower the wage an IT professional can command.

(sorry for making an empty one-liner -- now I understand why others post one-liner drivel in response to others.)

20. no one here is "blaming foreigners"
we are blaming THE CORPORATOCRISY that, in collusion with those in political power, is rushing towards The Race To The Bottom.

21. This guy always supports foreign workers over US workers.
It's almost as if he wants us all unemployed.

17. Let's use them WISELY. Not for greed or anything else.
Right now the whole system is being abused and needs as much reform as the public school system.

19. i really do believe
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 09:49 PM by musette_sf
that there is not a single H-1B job that an American citizen could not perform, above and beyond what any H-1B could do.

(not including those fake job listings where the requirements are tailored to fit ONLY an H-1B worker)

ps, loved your old user name... but embracing CHANGE :-)

6. proving that they still don't get it
My bonus was cancelled, as was a year cost-of-living increase in my salary. Everything else has gone up, but I effectively make less now than a year ago.

My car will be paid off this year. Am I going to run out and buy a new one? Doubtful, given the crappy economy.

It's far more complicated than a tax break, or getting me "in the showroom". :eyes:

11. The only ones able to purchase a new car are the rich
and, as we can see from the current state of the economy, there aren't enough of them to keep things afloat.

8. I seem to remember a little problem with getting credit...
While the tax break might be nice, many of us NEED THE MONEY UP FRONT in order to purchase a new vehicle. Oh, and a stable job to be able to keep making the payments, plus the increase on the car insurance for a new car.

9. As a small part of a big package
it's not a bad idea to try and help the beleaguered auto industry. Based on the lack of people on the car lots I drive by every day, there are going to be a lot more layoffs coming.

10. I think our goverments goals are set too low.
If they think to just getting back to where we were 3 years ago is good enough they are idiots. I am tired of our consumer economy.

12. The average American can only shake their head wondering-------=-
Attempting to use the Tax System when people do not even have jobs
only blows one's mind. Those people who do have jobs are hanging
on and not spending one penny they can save.

It is kinda like GOP giving Taxcuts to people who do not have jobs
and no hope of one anytime soon.
