WASHINGTON - US Vice President Dick Cheney assured political allies late Saturday that an early withdrawal of US forces from Iraq would not be allowed, despite efforts by Congress to impose a deadline on US combat operations there.

The comments followed an unprecedented vote Friday in the House of Representatives, which called for a pullout of US combat troops from Iraq by August 31, 2008 -- regardless of whether Iraqi security forces are ready to take over from them or not.

Even IF we managed to pass an actual bill with teeth demanding a pull out with no gray area, Bush would just veto it. IF something managed to hit his desk with ANYTHING that even resembled a clause that could possibly lead to a reduction in forces, he will attach a signing statement nullifying the clause.

Sure, we could then sue, but do you really think it would make it to his personally stacked Supreme Court before his term ends? Either way, it wouldn't matter.

We are stuck in Iraq until 09. Shitty but true. I agree with continuing to attempt to force Bush's hand, because it is the right thing to do, and because it shows the public that Dems want no ownership of this war, and that if elected in 08, we will get us out.

But really, we ain't going anywhere before then.
