Miley Cyrus' slant-eye pose slammed by Asian group
Tue Feb 3, 2009 2:40pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Disney teen idol Miley Cyrus has been accused of taunting and mocking Asians by making slant-eye poses in a personal photograph with her friends.

A snapshot of Cyrus, 16, best known as the star of the Disney Channel show "Hannah Montana", and friends posing with an Asian friend and pulling their eyes sideways surfaced on the Internet this week.

The OCA, a national organization in the United States dedicated to advancing the social and political welfare of Asian Pacific Americans, called on the singer-actress to apologize.

The group said the image "falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent."

"Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American friends," OCA executive director George Wu in a statement issued on Monday.

Wu said the fact that an Asian friend was included in the photo "does not make it acceptable."

And she is only 16.

6. creepy, huh?
I really can't take more than 1 second of her on my TV - She moves like Elaine Bennis when she would "dance" - all jerky and without any "soul." I wish she would leave me the fuck alone but where ever I go, I see her face - on kids shoes, shirts, jeans... in print ads she is every-fucking-place.

Ugh... A lot of good that did for her predecessor Brittany. :eyes:

7. I heard a brief interview on the radio a few months back
She may have been under the weather, but I swear that she sounded like a 40-year-old whiskey drinker who chain-smokes.

She's the heir apparent to the Olsen Twins' creepy media omnipresence, which was plenty sick enough in its own day.

it's a given... and yes those can include, racist, sexist, disgusting, etc. Just take your pick...

But honestly, we shouldn't act any differently than if we saw the same thing in the idiot kid down the street...

13. "Faux" means fake, I don't think the Asian group is being insincere.
You can say it's much ado about nothing if you want, but I wouldn't call their protests artificial.

15. We have a problem in our society. We hold teenagers to adult standards.
Young people do stupid stuff, and learn from it. I doubt anyone in that photo is racist, since one of them is Asian and taking part in the photo. It was teenage humor that is lost on adults.

It bother me that we can't just realize that kids sometime just act like kids.

If my 14 year old daughter were taking pictures of herself like that, her phone would be BYE BYE for a long time.

27. Sitting on the lap equals what?
You've never sat on anyone's lap before?

When I was her age we used to pile in cars with everyone sitting on laps. It meant nothing.

Does everything have to be sexualized?

29. What's the big deal?
No context to the photo, a bunch of kids clowning for the camera....My 10 yo daughter loves Miley/Hannah and we have no problem with the young lady. Maybe a few stupid things have happened, but in the long run she's a kid that sets a pretty good example for her fans. We were lucky to get tickets to her show a year ago and my wife and daughter had a FANTASTIC time. She seems so much more gounded than other teen stars to us....
