I spoke yesterday with Roger Doiron, the activist Maine gardening afficionado who launched the petition drive to persuade President Obama to replant Eleanor Roosevelt's original 1943 Victory Garden. "Growing exponentially" were Roger's words. Mrs. Roosevelt's effort to set an example for Americans weary of the Great Depression and World War II was extraodinarily successful, inspiring Americans to deal with shortages and rationing by planting their own home "victory gardens." They ended up growing 40% of their own fresh produce! I've heard those among my parents' generation speak fondly of victory gardens since I was a kid. Obama could do worse than borrowing from First Lady Roosevelt's example, eh? We are, in fact, in pretty dire straits, thanks to the outgoing would-be neocon dictator, eh? We're doing all we can to help with Roger's effort here in Virginia, and I urge others to check it out.
Anyone wishing to sign the petition can find it at www.eattheview.org ....... and hey, gardening is a lot of fun.
