Rice not interested in being Pac-10 commissioner

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — Former Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice is a big fan of Pac-10 sports, but she's not interested in becoming commissioner of the conference.

Rice was approached about the opening and was flattered by the opportunity, her spokesman, Colby Cooper, said Tuesday.

Cooper says Rice wants to pursue teaching and writing at Stanford University. She was a professor and provost at the Pac-10 school before joining the Bush administration.

Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen is retiring July 1 after 26 years. League spokesman Jim Muldoon said in an e-mail the league office has not been part of the search and he could not confirm whether Rice was approached. The search is being handled by a committee of university presidents.

Rice is a big pro football fan and once said her dream job would be NFL commissioner. Before Roger Goodell succeeded Paul Tagliabue as commissioner, Rice's name was sometimes mentioned as a possible candidate.

I never understood the "Condi Rice would make a great sports commissioner" stories from the past few years...She has been hyped for the NFL, MLB, and some other high-profile sports jobs...What do people know about her that I don't?

I saw the story this morning in the sports section, and immediately thought :wtf:

Reading the account closely, which is always recommended when dealing with puzzling stories involving Republicans, I notice that nobody from the Pac-10 is quoted or can confirm that an offer was made. The identity of who approached Rice isn't disclosed, and the only other person named is Rice's publicity flack--sorry, spokesman. And then you realize that this is probably nothing more than a publicity stunt on Rice's part as she fishes around for speaking gigs and maybe a little more than a sinecure at Stanford (which really shouldn't be hiring war criminals).

Hyping the conflicts. And making sure they happen. Like if there is a daily briefing that says bin Laden determined to attack within the USA, she can just toss that aside and make sure that war happens.

I don't want Condoleeza Rice doing the same thing to the Pac-10 she's already done to the United States' reputation around the world.
