CALL THE SENATE RIGHT F*@KING NOW!!1!1!!
For real, though.

Please.

Go here for information:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=106x33211

, even a sure thing isn't a sure thing unless you DO IT.

"Word on the street is that phone calls to Congress are running 100 to 1", against President Obama's stimulus package.

Bernie Horn over at Campaign for America's Future says:

That means pick up the telephone and call 202-224-3121 (or use the toll-free service at 866-544-7573). Ask the Capitol operator to transfer you to one of your state’s U.S. senators. When you’re connected, say you’re calling to urge your senator to “support the Obama economic recovery plan and oppose all conservative amendments.” Call back and repeat for your other senator. Then contact everyone you know and urge them to do the same.

Here’s what’s at stake. If enacted, President Obama’s economic recovery plan will be the biggest and boldest progressive legislation in the past 40 years. These are just some of the highlights:

$142 billion for a middle-class tax cut
$47 billion to extend unemployment benefits
$16 billion to expand food stamps
$17 billion in one-time payments to low-income Americans
$26 billion to expand access to health care
$87 billion to help states pay for Medicaid
$24 billion to modernized health information technology
$46 billion to fix bridges and roads
$80 billion to improve public education
$19 billion for school construction
$14 billion to make college more affordable

Make the calls today, Undergrounders. This is what we do to win.

In case you missed it

pick up the telephone and call 202-224-3121 (or use the toll-free service at 866-544-7573). Ask the Capitol operator to transfer you to one of your state’s U.S. senators. When you’re connected, say you’re calling to urge your senator to "support the Obama economic recovery plan and oppose all conservative amendments." Call back and repeat for your other senator. Then contact everyone you know and urge them to do the same.

67. Call first. Next donate to Move On.
They have sent out an email. They are taking donations to target senators who started this deceit with counter- attack ads. Had we been prepared for the expected Rush onslaught, we'd have a better defense. After how they treated Bill Clinton's tax plans, we'd thought they'd play nice.
.. Also.. The GOP's alternative stimulus bill.- sure.- call for cutting payroll taxes in half. Another attempt to bankrupt the government so future Hurrican Katrina's will be the common response.

Call your Senators and let them know you are a constituent, and that it's necessary to pass this bill.

Then call other Senators!

(Some of these numbers may no longer be working.. the toll-free numbers come and go. Please report any that don't seem to be functional.)

CALL!

38. I couldn't get through by phone, so I settled for e-mail
My senators (Bernie Sanders and Pat Leahy) are usually on the right side of every issue -- and for that matter are often leading the charge -- so I'm not worried about them. If I lived in some other state, I'd have kept dialing till I got through.

in Massachusetts are also progressive. (Ted Kennedy and John Kerry) You can't get much further to the left than them!

I only logged on awhile ago, but I'm quite certain I don't have to worry as much as people in some states do. That's a blessing for the most part.

41. You can also use the Senators email forms at Senate.gov
here is mine to both of my Senators, short, sweet and to the point:

Senator,

People can nitpick all they want over the shovel-ready projects that are easy to mock, but they WILL create jobs. To build a skatepark, you need workers, who then pay taxes, buy clothes, eat out, pay their mortgage. Please vote for the Stimulus.

Thank you.

they've got nothing without the talk radio monopoly, and dems don't have anything like it. they can lie as much as they want 24/7 and dems never hear it.

First I asked if they were in. Of course, they weren't, so I asked if I could leave a message for them. I was told I could, so here's what I said:

The Senate needs to pass President Obama's stimulus package. Senator ________ should do what the American people want, not what Rush Limbaugh wants, and vote for the stimulus package.

I don't know, we'll see if it makes a difference...

42. I wonder if the working class conservatives who are calling in
against the bill realize what is in the bill? If they did, it seems they would understand that it helps their families more than anything that Bush and the repubs did. I'm afraid most of them are calling in against the bill because Rush and Sean told them to. The Democrats should be out front on this IMO, they have access to the media, they have the bully pulpit of the executive office but they are still allowing the repubs to define the bill.

I can't call from work but I sent both T Udall and Bingaman this:

Dear
I am writing to urge you and your colleagues in the Senate to support the Obama economic recovery plan and oppose all conservative amendments. This stimulus package will be the beginning of a new America in which we can all be secure participants in this democracy. Please note that I will be speaking to MY friends and colleagues to urge you and yours to do right by America and the Americans that have given so much.

Respectfully submitted,
me

PS (the DU spell check suggested I change Bingaman to Wingman! awesome.)

49. What does 142 bullion for taxcuts for the "middle class" mean exactly
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 04:56 PM by ooglymoogly
I'd guess if the pugs had their druthers, just for the purposes of this bill, the "middle class" means anyone making under 20 million a year. In any case tax cuts are the least effective way to boost the economy; Adding to the economy just 30 cents for every dollar spent...a net loss of 70 cents per dollar spent...on the other hand, food stamps, welfare, lower income and the like boosts the economy $1.30 for every dollar spent because that money has to be spent into the economy. The tax cuts are too big of a giveaway to places it is not needed and does not have to be spent so urgently. So just to recap;
Every dollar the government pumps into the economy for tax cuts equals a 30 cent boost to the economy.
For every dollar the government pumps into the economy for the more desperate, boosts the economy by $1.30.
and if memory serves, every dollar spent on infrastructure and job creation brings in $1.70 for every dollar spent + we get something vital in return and that my friends is a win win situation.

What is wrong with this picture?

So ixnay on the tax cuts, except those struggling to survive, and more, more, more on the infrastructure that will carry us into the next century and lots to help the needy pull themselves up from poverty, thus adding to the economy forever...or at least until another puke steals an election.

69. Is that actually what is in the bill and non negotiable, or like everything else
giveaway negotiable?; Negotiations the Pugs seem be winning hands down while giving nothing in return. Though the 20 million was hyperbole it was to make a point about the foolish giveaways.

50. I already did
Called my two senators, Mikulsi and Cardin. I got right through to Cardin's office, identified myself to the staffer as a Maryland resident and constituent of Senator Cardin's. I then said that I supported the stimulus package and wanted Senator Cardin to vote for it. The staffer sort of grunted, said he'd pass my message on to the senator and hung up. It took me 10 or 15 minutes of continuous calling to get through to Senator Mikulsi's office. My message was the same to her as to Cardin. The staffer thanked me for calling, asked me for my name and address, promised she would pass my comments on to the Senator and thanked me for calling.

81. If President Obama had spent as much energy clarifying this bill to the
American people as he did soliciting support of PUGs, he'd have been better off. He may have blown this one because the Gopers will never give an inch EVER on anything. One of the guests on either Rachel or Countdown last night was explaining how Obama needed to get the word out to the people about what is in the package. Actually it makes sense that taxpayers would like to know and we have no idea. The last bailout was a disaster at taxpayer expense; naturally citizens are wary. Sell the thing if it is worthwhile....to USA not the useless and hopeless minority party. P.S. Calls are probably from Rushistas.

that we in NC have a Dem Senator!)

Dear Senator Hagan:

I am writing to urge you to support the Obama economic recovery plan. We need jobs, not tax cuts for the already wealthy. We need help for people who have already lost their jobs. We need money for infrastructure replacement. Heck, we need money for everything the Republicans have ignored for the last eight years under George Bush.

Thank you.

At first I wasn't going to send Burr an e-mail, but I think I will. Think I'll remind him
that if he doesn't put the people of NC first, he might just see himself join Liddy in retirement!

On edit: Just sent the e-mail to Burr. Damn form. Wouldn't go without a phone number.

The priority in the stimulus bill should be putting people back to work and reinvesting in our nation's infrastructure. The Buy America and Buy American provisions will ensure that our taxpayer dollars are used to do just that.

On January 28, the House passed a strong stimulus bill that included provisions that gave preferences to locally made iron and steel in transit projects and school buildings, and to locally made uniforms for the Transportation Security Administration. The Senate will vote this week on their stimulus package, which expands on some of these provisions. A pack of multinational corporations are trying to get the Buy America provisions stripped from the Senate bill. Tell your members of Congress to maintain and expand upon these provisions.

"$17 billion in one-time payments to low-income Americans"

YES!!! For ONCE, those of us on SSI will get an extra month $$$$!!!!

We were left out before, and it hurt.

I was assuming that it meant the usual..... that that much more would be taken from Section 8 rent, food stamps, etc. But someone told me, NO, this time it's not "vulnerable" to those means-tested programs.

Do you know what it would mean to us to be able to have some extra, if only for one time?

Geee, maybe somebody could go to the Dentist!

Geee, maybe somebody could get new glasses!

Geeee, maybe somebody could get some other necessity that has been put off.

" But you'll get no argument from me."

Thanks! This would mean so much to so many of us!

But the "Buy America" stuff is going to cause a trade war. What country gets the most shaft from the Buy American steel provision?

Canada.

Yes, really. The steel trade between the two nations has doubled in the last five years. The Toronto Star commented on this last week. If they want to go this buy American route, here's a better idea - exempt first world countries from the bill. Allow Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia and other first would countries into this. That way, the field is largely level. They'll remember the favor.

there isn't even any requirement to hire American workers for these projects. Absolutely fucking "NO!" I can't even believe this. I just found out in Hello_Kitty's thread about this. (Never assume what ought to be common sense, right?)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4983574#top

We need to require not just that only Americans are hired for these projects in the stimulus, but that our Federal government is required to hire Americans for Federal jobs. This is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS.

Hell no! I'd benefit from other provisions of it too, but it takes more than that to bribe me. I'm disgusted.

125. Email I sent to Bond (R) MO
Senator,
With regard to the Stimulus Legislation before the Senate. I too agree that it is far, far from a perfect bill and I wish the situation was one where it was not necessary. I would point out to you that we seem to be in the current state of affairs due to the mismanagement, lack of oversight and overspending created by the Republican Party’s Control of the White House and Congress. Tax cuts (particularly for the wealthy) are not the answer. Jobs are the answer.
I urge you to suggest to your party members to stop with the silly parade of amendments, vote for the bill and do something for the American People who’s situation continues to deteriorate.

Sincerely,

132. I contacted my Ohio senators
I finally got through to Sen. Voinovich's office in Nelsonville, OH. (phone: (740) 441-6410.) All his other office phoness were busy. I also sent an email to Senator Brown when I couldn't reach his Washington office, but I think he's already solidly on board with the stimulus.

145. It's always good to support and thank those who vote as we would like!
"but I think he's already solidly on board with the stimulus."

From what I understand, they are getting calls 100 to 1 AGAINST this bill, so your call will mean much to him and his staff!

I have a feeling that Menendez and Lautenberg will vote for the bill, but I reminded them that NJ is a donor state and gets the least back for every dollar they send to Washington.

I may call my parents senators too (Schumer and Gillibrand) prentending to be my mom and asking them to vote for the bill.

138. E-mail works
The phones are constantly busy both the regular lines and toll free, but if you go to your senators' web pages there is usually a form for sending an e-mail. I know from experience that senators have the e-mail monitored and counted, at least in Maryland and Delaware.

146. Definite KICK - can't R as I'm (as usual) a day late......
The only disappointment in the bill, to me, is that I don't think enough money from the package is targeted at infrastructure.

Calls are made and fingers crossed.
