'Evangelists' accused of stealing from Tenn. homes

Wed Feb 4, 9:03 pm ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police in Nashville said two young burglars covered their intent by talking religion. Police arrested a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old and charged them with aggravated burglary. The Tennessean reported the teens were going through a neighborhood, knocking on doors while carrying church bulletins.

Police said if someone answered the door, one of the youths would talk about religion. If no one was home, the residence was burglarized.

But police said three homes in the area were burglarized, with electronic equipment stolen.

Authorities said they recovered stolen goods from a car the suspects were driving.

2. If I were going to commit crimes in TN, I would talk religion too.
Religious people are by far the easiest group to fool, no matter what you're selling. Look at the crazy stuff they already believe! Once you believe in a virgin birth, 6000-year-old earth, etc., believing that bush is a good president (or that those nice men at the door are here to discuss Jeebus) is just a tiny step away!

I think it was Nixon-era svengali Charles Colson who expressed delight at the ease with which the wool could be pulled over the eyes of the toxically religious evangelicals by Republican con men. Nothing much has changed.

8. I live in Tennessee, believe in God and Jesus and think Bush
was the worst president - ever.

So much for your broad-brush bigotry.

3. Jesus is watching you
Burglar rummaging around in a house hears "Jesus is watching you"
Looks around, sees no one and keeps going.
Hears the voice again "Jesus is watching you"
Looks around again and sees a parrot.
Asks the parrot "Did you say that?"
Parrot goes "Yep"
Asks the parrot if his name was Jesus
The parrot replies "Nope, my name is Moses"
Burglar asks "What kind of people name their parrot Moses"
Parrot says "The same kind of people that name their Rotweiler Jesus"

4. The same general tactic is common.
Knock on the door, if no answer kick the door in.

One problem with that is, I don't necessarily feel obliged to answer the door every time a stranger rings the doorbell. If you kick my door in while I'm here, the only thing in question after that would be the caliber of the several holes you would incur, depending on what room I happen to be in at the time.

7. My father's favourite saying was
"The Lord helps those who help themselves." I can still hear my grandmother's response:

"Yes, Lloyd, but the Lord help those who are caught helping themselves....."
