COVINA, Calif. - The ex-husband of one of the nine people killed at a Christmas Eve party has been asked by a landlord to pay the dead woman's rent.

Broadcrest Foothill Apartment Homes claims Alicia Ortiz broke her lease and gave "insufficient notice to vacate."

Ortiz and her 17-year-old son were killed by her sister's disgruntled ex-husband.

The landlord of her Upland apartment informed her former husband, Carlos Ortiz, that he owes $2,821 in rent and penalties.

Says Carlos Ortiz, "I just don't understand

2. The ex-husband isn't responsible for his former wife's debts.
And good luck collecting from a corpse, Mr. Landlord.

What a pig that landlord must be. The ex-husband should tell the landlord he plans on filing suit against him for alienation of affection, and for not providing adequate security for building tenants. We'll see how far that goes. :eyes:

5. Well, if they had just left her body there to rot it would have solved the insufficient notice to va
Although serving her for breaking the lease by non-payment

would be kinda punishing for the server.

BTW her ex has no legal obligation to pay unless it was in her divorce agreement for him to pay the rent

but then the ex's name would be on the lease anyway

6. Thats it? THats all there is?
I hate it when MSNBC posts links like that. Did anyone talk to the landlord? Anything? I'm feeling that story was very anti climactic.

7. Here in Madison, last year a 21 year old student was murdered in her apartment
and her boyfriend came home and discovered the body and when he told the rental agency that he didn't want to live there any more after such a traumatic experience they told him they wouldn't let him out of the lease. After publicity and threatened law suit they finally gave in.

8. It's good he went to the press
Now all he has to do is tell the landlord to go pound sand. He is no longer responsible for any debt incurred by an ex spouse after the divorce.

I'm sure the loss of the security deposit more than compensated them plus getting the place cleaned for the next tenant.

It's just nice to have Broadcrest's management exposed as total assholes.

9. I predict this asswipe masquerading as a human being will try to
sue the woman's estate, thereby taking money from her minor child (as her heir). I also predict a massive public outcry that will force him to back down.

Do we perhaps have a name of this landlord or property manager???? Just curious.
