Framing The Economy Debate

What's going on withe the stimulus package? At a time when it is obvious to anyone with a pulse and a television that the US economy is in shambles, why in the world is Obama having a problem getting traction for his recovery plan?

Perhaps we're distracted by the Daschle debauchle (which actually just paves the way for the more sensible choice, Dr. Howard Dean . . . but I digress), but this seems a no-brainer. The US economy has been hit with the double-whammy of 8 years of Bush Crime Family trickle-to-the-CEO's economics and perpetual war for perpetual war-profiteering. Why is anyone missing the recovery message?

Jeanne Cummings writing for Politico.com put it this way in her excellent article today: "At this crucial juncture in the push to pass an economic recovery package, President Barack Obama finds himself in the most unlikely of places: He is losing the message war. Despite Obama’s sky-high personal approval ratings, polls show support has declined for his stimulus bill since Republicans and their conservative talk-radio allies began railing against what they labeled as pork barrel spending within it . . .The anxiety over lost momentum seemed almost palpable this week as the president in television interviews voiced frustration with his White House’s progress and the way his recovery program was being demonized as a Democratic spending frenzy. In Obama’s own words in an NBC interview, it’s his job to “get this thing back on track.”

For the sake our economic survival, let's hope that happens soon.

Congress Raises Executive Minimum Wage To $565.15/Hr

WASHINGTON, DC—Congress approved a bill to increase the executive minimum wage from $515.15 to $565.15 an hour, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) announced Monday. The move marks the first increase in the wage since 1997.

"This is good news for all Americans who work in the upper levels of commerce," DeLay said. "Almost a third of America's hard-working executives toil at corporations day after day, yet still live below the luxury line. It was about time we gave a boost to the American white-collar worker."
The wage was calculated to help executives meet the federal standard-of-easy-living mark of $1.1 million a year. DeLay said that, although his goal is to ultimately reach an executive minimum wage of $800 per hour, he was satisfied with what he characterized as a "stop-gap measure."

"Many of the thousands of Americans overseeing the nation's factories, restaurant chains, and retailers can't even afford a jet," DeLay said. "It's our long-term goal to ensure that no one who sees to it that others work hard for a living will have to go without the basic necessities of the good life."

Under the new law, the executive-minimum salary will increase to more than $1.175 million a year, plus mandatory overtime for executives who work more than seven minutes after 5 p.m., on holidays, outside of their home offices, or from a limousine or non-chartered private aircraft. A separate section of the bill includes concessions for second- and third-housing credits, as well as single-player health-spa coverage.

32. I don't think it's medical problems because he's been going

(just not outside for me like he's supposed to). I think it's more weather related than anything. I've just never seen a male dog who doesn't want to pee on every tree and lightpole he encounters. Fire hydrants are a myth, by the way. In my seven months of walking dogs, none have ever peed on a fire hydrant. They all smell 'em, but the don't pee on them. I wonder if it's a concerted effort to destroy the cliche. :rofl:
