HONOLULU (AP) - A key committee in the Hawaii Legislature has given its approval to civil unions for same-sex couples in the state.
The House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously in favor of the civil unions measure Thursday after hours of impassioned testimony from hundreds of people.
The proposal will get a vote next week in the full House of Representatives, where a majority of lawmakers have already signaled support for it. Then it would be considered by the state Senate.
The bill would allow same-sex partners who obtain a license to enter into a civil union, which affords the same rights, benefits and protections that state law provides to married couples.
