2. In parts of CA it pays as much as $22/hr

near me its $17 and you can work up to full time. And that's the starting rate. When I did it in college I got moved up quickly. That would be a huge help for our family of 6.

That's what I heard the other day. We're a family of 2, but we're both in school, and his company might cut him to 4 days a week. Also, our rent will in all likelihood increase with the lease renewal in May, as it always does. We have to do something.

32. I'd flunk the math part of the test, sigh

My excuse for being so dumb: I went to a 2-room country school (1st and 2nd grade in one room, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 2nd room) that was *HORRIBLE* and was never taught math beyond very basic stuff). In the 4th grade I was the only student and the teacher just put me with the 3rd graders, so I missed that whole year of math. I guess they figured farm kids only needed to know how to add and subtract. It dragged down my entire educational life, to the point where I was doing so badly I quit high school. I later finished, but it wasn't easy. Needless to say, I never went to college. I was well above average in reading, writing, spelling, geography and grammar because I was a voracious reader, read encyclopedias for fun, but I couldn't add fractions if you paid me large amounts of money.

44. I don't think there are any fractions questions

I'm trying to remember the math part and I can only remember adding and multiplying problems. There aren't too many math questions, so you might pass it.

Map skills, vocabulary, filing, employee relations, filling out forms properly are some of the other categories. The math section was only five or six problems IIRC.

I'd suggest going online and checking out the practice test just to be sure. You may ace it except for the math or you may be able to handle the math just fine.

48. You should go for it. First, it can't hurt and second, the math is

very basic. I believe you only need to get 11 of 28 total and if half of it is math, which I don't think it is, you'd only half to get 3 to pass.

Honestly, I think the math portion is around a quarter of the whole thing.

There is a practice test online so try that first.

BTW adding fractions only means multiplying the top by the top and the bottom by the bottom. So 1/2 + 2/3 = 2/6 which = 1/3.
It looks more complicated than it is.

PS You should also try college if you can afford it. Your spelling is flawless and there are plenty of subjects that don't require math. I hope you go for it!

6. I did this last Dec, made 100 on my test, and no one has heard anything from them.. I

found a job in the interim, so may not do it even if they call, but I found it strange that no one in my area has heard anything.

7. I'm starting Monday - I got an office job by applying as a census-taker.

For other office as well as census-taker jobs they also like fluency in another language, and those who have a background or experience with community ethnic and social groups (including the homeless).

I'm so concerned for all who are still looking, but I hope I'm an example that SOME hiring is still out there (especially in the Census now).

8. Why not leave those jobs for people who don't have work.

Working to supplement you income take jobs away from other people who need them. that's all I have to say.

10. That's an unfair comment.

People need to supplement meager incomes for all kinds of reasons. What if your spouse is sick or disabled? Rent went up? You have kids who can't afford college without help? Or you're self-employed, like me, and your clients are all cutting back so you don't have enough work to pay your bills. (and in my case, I also have TWO kids in college, and it's very difficult to keep them there. We also had a car stolen--twice--and 2 deaths in the family within the past year. And the funeral for my mother-in-law is charged on our credit card because nobody else in the family could pay their share. Hubby's job is on thin ice as the new hire in a bad economy, our house is double-mortgaged to the hilt and we could lose it if my income doesn't pick up again. So yes, I need to supplement my income and no, I am not going to apologize or defer to others who are also in need.

Our government should take better care of the unemployed and the sick. But I can't take care of the whole world. I have to look after my own family first.

You should apologize for that remark.

Scored 100% as well. They are desperate here to find people, the test lady told me.

They only pay $13.50/hr here plus tax free mileage of $.58/mile. The woman told me they "say it's only ten weeks" but if you have a decent work ethic you may get more work.

Initially, maps have to be made for each enumerator so that's officy stuff you may get called for. There is a paid 40hr training session.

Don't get discouraged if you haven't heard a thing yet. Once they get enough people hired and get close to sending out the mail forms to households they will call, I was assured.

It's the only job in town around these parts....

42. I did the 1990 census and we worked MUCH longer than 10 weeks

The government works slowly and there's quite a bit of redundancy. If you test and you do well (I hear you only need to get 11 of 28 - but that could be BS) you will probably get a call. I know its hard to be patient when you're struggling. Believe me, I can relate! Be persistent! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

and you can go online and get a practice version to give you an idea of the type questions.

The gal who tested me said she's been doing this every census and makes a very decent income to supplement her husband's salary.

It is tough waiting, but thanks for reminding folks about this option. There have been a few other threads about it but not so much job loss at that time (a few weeks ago lol). Now folks are desperate for anything and it just so happens that the census is desperate as well.

it "wasn't my field" so, being an idealist out to help the world, I turned it down. Wonder where I'd be now if I'd taken it.

37. I signed up with them and took their test

FOUR WEEKS AGO. I scored 27 out of 28 on their test and I was assured they would call me in 2-4 weeks. I'm still waiting. Unbeknownst to me, they started taking applications in September. I didn't apply until December. With all the people out of work I think they probably got a much larger response than they were anticipating and probably have all the workers they need for now. At least in my area.

in the next couple of weeks but you might want to call back. I know people are still taking tests so I'm assuming they still need people. I am taking my test on Tuesday but my sister took hers in December. We called yesterday and they said they'd be calling people soon. Don't give up!!
