Although official Pennsylvania job numbers for January won't be released until later this month, the new national numbers imply a likely loss of nearly 30,000 Pennsylvania jobs following a dip of 59,100 jobs in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The recession initially hit construction and manufacturing hardest, but the continued elevated job losses signal that in January this recession was starting to touch workers in nearly every part of the economy (see accompanying image).
January numbers on initial claims for unemployment insurance were released yesterday for Pennsylvania . The U.S. Employment and Training Administration (ETA) reported that, on average, this January there were 49,230 initial claims for unemployment insurance each week, 51% higher than the number in January 2008 , the first month of the current recession.
