Strickland wants to ban corporal punishment in Ohio schools

COLUMBUS — Spare the rod and better educate the child.

That's Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's opinion and he's trying to make a school paddling ban part of state law.

"The governor does not believe corporal punishment has a place in a 21st century classroom," Amanda Wurst, Strickland's spokeswoman, said Thursday, Feb. 5. "He's made this part of his reform effort."

John Stanford, Strickland's executive assistant for education policy, said the ban would be in the school reform and funding provisions in the proposed state budget. Strickland unveiled the budget Monday, Feb. 2, and legislation to enact it is expected to be introduced soon.

An Ohio law that took effect in 1994 discourages paddling. However, a concession to local control permits districts to use paddling by following certain procedures, such as establishing a community task force and studying discipline in the district.

1. When you hit children you teach them that hitting solves problems.
We should be smarter than that by now...

2. I'm against corporal punishment too. I don't think anybody
below the rank of sergeant should be allowed to hit a kid.

3. Wow. I am amazed there are still any schools that have corporal punishment.
I'll have to send this to my dad. He's from Columbus.

4. We hit kids in Ohio? Really? Is this real? Are you kidding? Ohio, U.S.?
Like, the capital is Toledo, they have Columbus, and they're south of the great lakes? That Ohio?

And, they're just NOW writing laws to prevent it?

I'd be fired in a week if I ever hit a kid in a NY state school.

I can't even fit this into my brain.

SHIT!
