Hey, there's a map online of all the Senate desks!
http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/art/special/Desks/chambermap.cfm

I saw some of them sitting down and wondered if those were their desks.

30. Looks like the Senate picked out their new seats just tonight (Friday)
If only getting this jobs bill passed was as easy as them picking out their new seats!

Webb, Tester, and I are together on the back row.Turns out I will be sitting in the same spot Hillary sat in last session.

As we are waiting for next vote people are picking out which desks they will sit in for next 2 years.Of course done by seniority.

9. That was the first think I did.
He sits next to Blanche Lincoln and Herb Kohl - just found out :)

I should say sat.
I'll tell you, I have been glued to Cspan the last 2 days (not a good thing - but I love it) and I really, really missed his voice during this fight. When Kerry got up and gave it to the repugs, I was thinking that Biden would have been the same way. He would have been pissed. Sadly we need more of that on our side.

13. That is amazing!
Now that would be a fun job to go around to everyone's desk and take pics.

I clicked on Kerry's desk and it said Kennedy in there, so maybe it was Kerry that had Kennedy's desk.

Didn't Joe have someone from the south?

28. I think I can see Kennedy's sig
Edited on Sat Feb-07-09 01:18 AM by vanderBeth
At the left column with most of the signatures, there are two really heavy, dark signatures then a really faint one above them, then "Kennedy Mass" above that one.

His signature is also on Ted's desk and is clearer. On the page with the image, there is a list of all the people who had that desk before.

4. Cool!
The original 48 desks made by Thomas Constantine in 1819 were constructed in such a way as to form three concentric semicircles on the Senate floor. Each desk was custom made for a particular location within the Chamber. Today the desks are no longer arranged in their original order, instead they move from place to place to suit the needs of the Senate.

At the start of each Congress, the desks are reapportioned between the two sides of the Chamber based on the number of Democrats and Republicans. After that, senators have the opportunity to relocate. Historically the Senate Chamber desks were assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. When a seat became available, the first senator to speak for it won the right to it. Today, at the beginning of each Congress, senators are given the option to change their seats, based on seniority. There are typically two reasons a senator might want to change desks: to gain a better location within the Chamber, or to occupy a desk previously used by a particular senator.

The only desks that are not assigned in the traditional manner are the Daniel Webster Desk, which is always occupied by the senior senator from New Hampshire; the Jefferson Davis Desk, which is used by the senior senator from Mississippi; and the Henry Clay Desk, which is given to the senior senator from Kentucky. The assignment of these desks is governed by a series of Senate resolutions.

26. That's interesting. I sat at the same desk that Debbie Stabenow had last session.
... and it's right next to the one Barack Obama had, too.

Yes ... as a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy, I was one of a handful who were hosted by Senator Clayborn Pell and Senator Phil Hart on a tour of the capital. At the time, the Senate was not in session but the House was. Senator Pell brought us onto the floor of the Senate ... and I got to sit at his desk.

Memories.
