Man pleads no contest to mounting deer departed

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was given probation and ordered to undergo evaluation as a sexual predator after pleading no contest to having sex with a dead deer he found in a roadside ditch last October.

A judge ruled Bryan Hathaway, of Wisconsin, must also be taken to a psychiatric institution specialising in sexual dysfunction.

It was not Hathaway's first experience with a dead animal.

Just before the incident with the deer, he had finished serving 18 months in prison after admitting to shooting a 26-year-old gelding named Bambrick.

He said he shot the horse - which he thought was a female - because it had resisted him as he tried to have sex.

Hathaway's deer escapade was discovered when police officers found him with his clothes covered in blood and what appeared to be animal hair.

Hathaway initially said he had helped his father clean a deer, but after questioning admitted to becoming aroused by the sight of the dead deer, which he dragged into the woods and assaulted.

During his trial - at which Hathaway pleaded no contest - his lawyer Frederic Anderson tried to argue that his client broke no law.

"Mr Hathaway had sex with a dead dear (sic)," he wrote to the court.

"The statute does not prohibit one from having sex with a carcass."

The idea of jail seems overly simplistic. I am a lot happier that he'll hump a dead animal than kill one that resists rape. I think he's improved, and maybe learned a lesson from the previous jail term.

We can't just jail all sexual aberrations because they disgust us. I don't see much difference between having sex with a dead animal vs. a blow up doll.

And this idea that he MIGHT become a sexual predator is also a dangerous precedent. We cannot go around locking up people for what they MIGHT do.

I hope the civil libertarians speak up on this one.
