Obama's Friday Night Massacre - of My Hope
Edited on Sat Feb-07-09 10:10 AM by placton
For years, I woke up Saturdays to see what Bush had done to us Friday nite - there was always something to shiver and retch about. Now, Obama ups the stakes with these treats, reneging on his campaign promises already - all on friday nite, so it wont get much play:

broken promises on the new tax cut, err stimulus bill: 42% tax breaks, 58% spending (and watch it get worse!)
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/07/us/politics/07stimulu...

broken promises on the bank giveaway, err rescue: "It looks like old habits won’t be dying hard in Washington: According to the rescue plan to be outlined by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday, banks will not be mandated to increase lending. Rather, the plan is to create a much-debated “bad bank” (though Treasury is hoping it won’t be called that) in order to take bank’s most toxic assets off their hands. According to The New York Times, “Obama administration officials say they have rejected nationalizing institutions by taking large ownership stakes. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/07/business/economy/07ba...

broken promises on Iraq same-old, err withdrawal (sounds like "Friedman units" to me): The Associated Press reports that the White House is considering at least two methods for troop withdrawal from Iraq. Though Obama promised to remove all combat brigades within 16 months of his inauguration, a new plan requiring 23 months—until the end of 2010—is also at play, as well as a middle-of-the-road 19-month compromise.
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966F5TG0&show_...

Not to mention Panetta's testimony about no prosecutions for war crimes, and withdrawing the truth ("renditions were for torture") for lies under oath ("yes senator, I withdraw that").

Sigh.
How about just a minute or two of perspective?
Amount to bailout AIG - at least $85 billion
Amount to bailout Citibank - at least $45 billion
Amount to bailout Bank of America - at least $45 billion, with guarantees on $118 billion in loans
Amount the Bush administration overpaid for bailed-out bank assets - $78 billion

Proposed cuts to President Obama's economic stimulus bill (currently being debated by 20 "centrist" senators):
$1.1 billion to Head Start
$24.8 billion to states for budget shortfalls in education programs
$15 billion to states for additional education funding
$2 billion to Child Care Development Block Grants
$150 million to funding for programs in the Violence Against Women Act

But he was not my preferred Democratic party nominee.

None of the things you complain about surprise me.

5. "None of the things you complain about surprise me."
They shouldn't surprise anyone who listened- thought about what they were hearing and followed Obama's Senate career.

My hope is that, unlike the Congressional Dems- who never seem to learn- and despite their huge egos- don't seem to embody much self-respect, that the Obama administration isn't going to continue to be taken to the cleaners and played for fools- all the while diminishing the effectiveness of their polcies.

Seems to me, there still a good chance that he's smarter than that.

Time will tell.

22. Iraq? All George Bush.
Bailout for banks proposal? Have you read the proposal? Do you know what Congress will vote on? Call your representative and Senator
Panetta statement?
Panetta said the Obama administration will no longer move detainees to secret CIA prisons for interrogation, because the so-called "black sites" have been ordered closed. But it will move prisoners to other countries for prosecution, he said. No prosecution for interrogators? What can I say? They were acting within the law, as declared by the Bush Administration.
Tax-cut bill? Call your Senator.
Cuts in the bill? Call your Senator..or piss and moan about how little Obama is doing for you.

8. To think that for five minutes there, I was missing this place
Then I came back ... and now not so much.

Obama is doing the very best he can with the situation he has. If you don't think so, you don't know much about the political structure he's dealing with. Real change happens slowly.

Now I'm going to go away for another four years.

9. Hi Melody
8 years ago, when I posted that Bush was like Hitler, I go called down - told I was a fool, told to tone down the rhetoric. I aint gonna do it now, just because it is a Dem. We MUST hold their feet to the fire on this bull! Or do you just want the excuses to continue?

Edited on Sat Feb-07-09 10:04 AM by melody
And I know it now even more. Anyone who isn't them needs the strongest support they can have behind them.

As a former director of the CIA has said, this world has very evil people in it with lots of power. All Obama can
do is try.

10. When they controlled the Presidency and both houses of Congress the
repukes simply ignored the Dems and did whatever the hell they wanted. The Dems, on the other hand, cower in fear of the minority party, appoint them to key posts, and make all kinds of concessions that are diametrically opposed to the change people thought they were voting for. I'm already starting to feel that I've been had.

Obama seems to be operating from a position of weakness and wimpy Harry Reid is only making matters worse. Hand the Dems lemonade, and they'll make lemons every time.

I'm not disappointed in Obama at all, mainly because I knew exactly what I was voting for, which was the lesser of two evils.

20. Wow, Obama has been President for a whole17 and 1/2 days and he...
has already "failed" in everything, according to your post! Damn, lazy SOB isn't he, he should have solved all the problems in the US by now. He should have never gone to Congress with his Economic Recovery Program, how naive can he be! Oh......wait.....hmmmm.....according to the Constitution, he HAS to send his bill to the House and the Senate, damn Constitution anyway. It must be President Obama's fault that the Constitution is written with THREE EQUAL branches - the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial.

Who knew President Obama proposed all those cuts to his Economic Recovery Plan....oh....wait....he didn't.

I did not say Obama was a failure, did I? What I said was he has broken several promises (in just the 17.5 days) and tossed it out on friday nite. When Bush did it, we complained, yes? Why should we be different with our own? We need to have the war over sooner, not later. We need to have a good bank, and not send money down the shitter. We need to punish - and stop - torture. Or is it ok when Obama does it?

The Senate and the House are fighting about them, President Obama doesn't have a vote on this. To put the blame on him is ludicrous and, imo, pathetic.

27. I read your post, none of it relates to ACTIONS taken by President Obama...
it is full of speculation as to what MIGHT happen, not what HAS happened.

The Economic Recovery Plan has not been voted on by the Senate, when it passes, it goes back to the House for the differences to be reconciled and then returns to each to be voted on again. You know that yet your OP is written as if all this has already happened and what has been speculated on will be the final result.

Why not wait until actual bills are passed, regulations/orders are signed before you start whining, it would give your posts a great deal more credibility, imo.

Your first and second link goes to "page not found"

Your third link has the header: "Obama considering at least 2 Iraq withdrawal plans" Considering various plans is a "broken promise"? Wow, who knew.
