It reminds me a lot of the healthcare battle at the beginning of the Clinton Administration. At first, the majority of people were supportive of the healthcare reform. By the time the Repubs got their PR campaign going, most were against it. Even though the Democrats had a good majority in the Senate, they were not able to pass any healthcare legislation. The same thing is happening now with the stimulus bill.
The Democrats would be better served to have a little "PR" of their own. The world will not end if the "stimulus bill" is not passed in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, the Democrats could let the people know that it is the Republicans that are holding up the legislation. They want more of the same taxcuts for the wealthy and disastrous policies that got us into this mess. A couple of weeks of bad PR for the Repubs and they would be ready to work with the Democrats. The sense of urgency helps the Republicans but it could backfire on them if the Democrats played their cards correctly.
