Online progressive advocacy group "Care2" jumped the shark for me today.. |
|
Care2 is constantly sending me petitions (at least once a week, often several times a week) to sign or asking me to call my Congressman for this that or another liberal cause and usually I say "OK" although the effectiveness of these online petitions has been reduced to absolutely nil through their tremendous overuse.
Today Care2 jumped the shark though and I'm not signing this one.
Today they asked me to ask Congress for national legislation to implement a Federal "warning system" against "superbug" infections.
Sorry Care2 but you can't legislate against the natural process of biological evolution.
We humans have caused these bacterium to evolve into resistant strains by overuse (much like your online petitions) of antibiotics for just about any reason instead of reserving their use for life threatening illnesses.
You can't just wave a magical legal wand to fix problems like this.
If you want to fix this problem:
1) It's going to require scientific innovation to discover new anti-biotics that are effective against these super bugs.
2) It's then going to require that the medical establishment (and particularly BIG PHARMA) use these new drugs very sparingly instead of every time someone washes their hands in their home bathroom.
Meanwhile Care2, back off on the ridiculous every other day petition requests because you are creating petition immune Congressmen by sending a new one every other day.

P.S.: We need a "jump the shark" smiley for DU!

1. Some of these progressive action sites are beginning to resemble Wildmon's |
|
AFA in terms of perpetual calls for action and donations. They just keep working their list, finding new things (War on Christmas, whatever) to keep their flocks frothed up over.
But I think "jump the shark" has jumped the shark.

2. Should we throw "jump the shark" under the bus then? |
|
I heard a new version of it as "nuke the fridge" referencing the last Indiana Jones movie where Indy hides out in the fridge during the nuclear blast.
