When you do that deep digging, you find that behind the so-called AFP is the Koch Family Foundations, the funding for which comes from Koch Industries. If Koch Industries sounds familiar, that's because it is the nation's largest privately owned energy company. (No wonder AFP has taken the position that global climate change is a hoax--the Koch business would no doubt be affected by the actions we should be taking in the face of the crisis. But more about that in future diaries.)

Members of the Koch family were founders of the John Birch Society (also worthy of further study and suspicion) as well as the libertarian think-tank, the Cato Institute. And isn't it interesting that Koch Industries is a major polluter:


Koch Industries is also a major polluter. During the 1990s, its faulty pipelines were responsible for more than 300 oil spills in five states, prompting a landmark penalty of $35 million from the Environmental Protection Agency. In Minnesota, it was fined an additional $8 million for discharging oil into streams. During the months leading up to the 2000 presidential elections, the company faced even more liability, in the form of a 97-count federal indictment charging it with concealing illegal releases of 91 metric tons of benzene, a known carcinogen, from its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Koch family members are major donors of Republican party candidates, and that has earned them plenty of favors from George Bush and others. Americans For Prosperity, as a voice for Koch Industries, may not have American prosperity in mind, but they sure do seem to have the prosperity of the Koch family in mind. No wonder AFP opposes government--it's the government at this point that is the only thing that might stop Koch Industries from destroying the environment.
