Why Pat Leahy Is The Right Man For The Time
It's as if his entire life was calibrated toward this moment. From the instant he entered the Senate in 1975, as a young ex-Prosecutor, Pat Leahy has had a passion for investigating and revealing corruption, and holding the perpetrators accountable.

In the eighties he was one of the main players in the Senate in the investigation of Iran-Contra. He was, in fact, damn near prescient about it.

Senator Leahy has been one of the chief proponents of Sunshine laws and open government. Recently, he's introduced both the War Profiteering Prevention Act and the Public Corruption Prosecution Act. He's been leading the fight in the Senate to restore Habeas Corpus.

For years now, while in the minority, Leahy and his staff have been investigating Halliburton and others. He's outraged over their abuses, and determined to have a full accounting.

He's outraged by what the administration has done to this country, and he won't let them off the hook. He won't let them slip through his fingers, and he won't be bought. Leahy isn't owned by big oil, or big pharma, or AIPAC. His fealty is to his constituents and the American people.

He's smart, tough and honest. And he's determined as hell.

So go get 'em Senator. A lot of people are counting on you.

2. I like his slap down of the sellout proposed by Arlen Specter
it was obivious that it was not going to fly and even Fox News didn't try to weasel word
what Leahy said.

3. It was only on his website that he
pointed out:

1,052 subpoenas issued for Clinton

3 for bush

He isn't going to let that fact die a pleasant death.

6. "He's smart, tough and honest. And he's determined as hell."
That sums Patrick Leahy up perfectly.

With good cause, he's "always" been one of my favorite congress-members.

As with (my own) Carl Levin and Ted Kennedy, I pray for his continued good health.

9. Contrast with Arlen Specter, who gives lip service to and
claims bragging rights for his own early career, His only integrity is a faux bow toward it, slyly using his skill at manipulating others to reinforce the notion that he is some sort of a paragon of virtue.
Specter gets insulted - or pretends to - if his natural superiority (self bestowed) or his judgment is questioned and thus confuses the potential questioner into silence.
This does not work too well with the self assurance of a Russ Feingold, whose own self analysis assures that his integrity is in, although it does sometimes silence him, in order to avoid a public quarrel.

Sen. Leahy's ascension to the head of judicial is gratifying, especially given Specter's squalid attempt at surrendering to bushco, last week. A more striking example of slimy pandering would be difficult to imagine, and it confirmed Specter's real contributions to political and judicial integrity.

12. You nailed that.
Arlen is the very definition of a legend in his own mind. He struts his stuff, brags about hisn independence and toughness, and folds like a cheap accordion. It was nothing but painful to watch the little toad chair the committee, and do the bidding of the admin, all the while pretending to be independent. Slimy pandering indeed.

11. How Specter can even show his face is BEYOND me.
Either he just doesn't know that EVERYONE is on to his bullshit or he just doesn't care. I can't wrap my mind around the idea that he isn't completely humiliated and embarrassed after what came out in those e-mails. It's mind-boggling. F*cking traitor.

14. I loved him when he lead the fight against the Communications Decency Act...
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 07:55 PM by calipendence
that was an unconstitutional part of the Telecomm act back in the 90's... and along with Russ Feingold and Paul Wellstone, was part of the small minority that voted NO to the telecomm act which Clinton SHOULD have vetoed then! He's always been one of the good guys! I would have campaigned for him then if he had run for president in those days!
