I would call him simply a "neo-conservative", not a fascist, but not mainstream either. With the excpetion of "centrist-homo-federalism", scientific research in global warming and stem cells (though its anyone's guess if Roe will survive even his first term) and campaign finance, he's more or less a third term for Bush....I'm guessing he will run a campaign, if nominated, that is exactly like Bush I's compared to Reagan's. Has a couple of progressive pet projects, but you are basically voting for the same guy who ran before. Actually, I can see it now. A McCain presidency will look like:

- No vetoing of the next Stem Cell Enhancement Act
- Staying the exact same path as Bush on Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Western Asian Affairs
- Replacing the "Defense of Marriage Amendment" with an "Unborn Child Protection Allowance Amendment" as something we will hear constantly about. I suspect about 15 or 20 states would ratify such a constitutional amendment to allow states to criminalize abortion....it could even help him win his second term....but I don't think there would be enough support in swing states to do any damage.
