1. I saw and I just switched channels because I don't care for the Grammys.
Coldplay was just on and although I have heard of them I cannot name a single song they have done. It would be nice to see Paul McCartney, but I don't want to have to sit through all the rest.

21. Actually, I am 56 and worked as a DJ at an oldies station in the 70s.
I'm not sure if they've made good music since the 60s.

31. that is over stating things
There has been a lot of good rock and roll over the past 40 years. The problem has been promotion. MTV with the posers, American Idol type shit, if you are looking for it on local mainstream radio I can understand that it is hard to find.

36. I haven't heard much music that I care for lately
and even when I do hear something I like on the radio it is hard to know who the artist is because unlike in the old days the radio seldom says who did the song. The radio stations here all seem to operate like an iPod shuffle when you hear the same songs over and over. Even the oldies station, when there are thousands of oldies available, still plays the same songs week in and week out. The contemporary stations are the worst where they continuously play the same songs.

Due to having a teenaged daughter I have been to a few concerts lately including Mayhemfest in Chicago and have seen Nonpoint and Sevendust as well as in past years seeing the Backstreet Boys and Nsync (which were like seeing The Beatles for a 10 year old girl at that time). The only band I have liked in the last decade or so has been Counting Crows and although they are still recording and touring (I saw them 3 times) I haven't heard much lately from them that I like.

I have to honestly say that I just do not care that much for music anymore. I really never listen to music at home, mostly in the car but even then I prefer to listen to NPR or public talk radio.

42. No, I would certainly include some 70s also.
Many of us have a strong preference for the music with which we grew up. Mine really started in 1964, the year I turned 12, with The Beatles and in the first half of the 70s I was in college and so I was into that music also, but as I grew older I gradually became estranged from new music and just lost interest. I did become a Counting Crows fan in the 90s with their first album "August and Everything After" which I liked every song on the cd. A song of theirs which I like in particular is "Angels of the Silences" which has some good lyrics but in particular I like the hard driving guitars which is reminiscent of the past.

She's the only country singer I like. I thought she did a good job. Justin Timberlake was the person who made me change the channel for a few minutes. They just listed the singers who will perform later and Justin is performing again. Seriously...wasn't once enough.

5. The Grammys is public corporate masturbation at it zenith.
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 08:58 PM by Lint Head
I have participated in the Grammys. I have seen and know the inside skinny on the so-called biz. The members of NARAS vote for the winners. The larger record labels have more members and always win. When I first got into the music business some ?# years ago a wealthy record executive gave me his ballot and said to vote for whoever I liked that he was bored with the process. Greed is the king. The people are fed just what the corporate overlords think they should buy. Demographics are just an advertising indicator.
Real musical art does not exist. That was true even with Mozart when the Church dictated what should be composed.
Art is created only by true rebels.

7. I'm a voting member...
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 09:26 PM by GReedDiamond
...for 16 years. Yeah, it's a "corporate love fest."

Yes, NARAS members vote. But who else would you expect to be voting on a Grammy ballot? The Grammys is not the American Music Awards.

You said:
The larger record labels have more members and always win.

Record label employees, if that's what you mean, can only be "associate members," assuming they don't otherwise qualify for voting member status by having at least the minimum number of actual pertinent credits pertaining to the creation of a product that was actually released.

Associate members cannot vote.

I'm an indie label diy punk rocker from 1979 until now. My last record was on this year's "entry list" for the Grammys.

Anybody with the proper credits may join, like I did, plus you have to pay your annual dues.

They do other stuff too, besides putting on an awards ceremony.

To copy myself from another Grammy thread here at DU:

However, beyond the awards show, NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) does do some pretty good work, for example, through the Grammy Foundation, funding music programs in schools ("Grammy In The Schools" - http://www.grammyintheschools.com ) and MusiCares. To quote from the web site:
It is the mission of MusiCares to ensure that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical or personal crisis. Its primary purpose is to focus the attention and resources of the music industry on human services issues that directly impact the health and welfare of music people. (http://www.grammy.com/MusiCares/Client_Services )

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5009510&mesg_id=5009510

Edited to add the phrase "indie label diy," for clarity.

9. Have you or anyone on your label ever won? Charity is a tax write off.
Not that charity is bad. I am still very involved in the music business. When I give to charity I do not do it for notoriety or recognition. People who need charity never ask from where the charity comes. Charity should never be for self but for others. If someone is truly Christian expecting something in return is a sin. I am was raised as a Christian but have grown to accept all people with religious belief in a deity and those that do not believe. Either way true charity should be 'total' giving and never for gain.

24. No. I said the awards show is corporate masturbation.
The music is well played by masterful musicians of which I consider myself one. As a long time member of the American Federation of Musicians and having appeared on many of these types of award shows I've seen the corporate editing of what we as citizens are exposed to and what is presented to the public to consume.

It is just 'my opinion' of which in the country I do have a right to express in a public forum. You can disagree and that's the American way. Most folks just go along with the flow. My issue is that if you don't make waves your are drowning.

If you think the Jonas Brothers is art that is your opinion.

I just saw where someone was bleeped. Hey, enjoy the show. It's all we have other than war criminals that just ran the country for eight years and are still free.

There are, in fact, some pretty good nominees, corporate or whatever, up for awards in Grammy 51.

22. Sorry...
...I don't "give to charity" for "notoriety or recognition," either.

In fact, I don't consider my dues paying and participation in NARAS a charitable activity. It can be, to some extent, a professional tax write off, though (consult your tax accountant for the details on that).

On the other aspect of your statement, sorry, I'm not a Christian. How did the Grammys become a "Christian" thing? You lost me there. (Oh yeah, except for those winners who start their acceptance speech with the phrase "I'd like to thank Jesus...")

I'm just a compassionate, caring, politically active punk rock atheist.

And I had the valid credits sixteen years ago to join the voting ranks of NARAS.

If you have the credits, you can join me, in the indie market minority, and try to sway the Recording Academy's direction away from the evil corporate domination you so decry. That's what I'm trying to do.

To answer your question: Have you or anyone on your label ever won?

Answer: NO, but this is the first year ever that all or any of the criteria for a project I've worked on has been eligible for even entering to begin with. And that had nothing to do with "corporate" influence on the entry process.

27. Good luck to you. Point taken. I was referring to Christianity
in terms of charity. You brought up the charity part. I was responding in respect to how NARAS is using charity. NARAS is a promotional arm of mega musical corporation. It's fine if you understand the context.

Thanks for the offer but I've worked with Clive Davis who was recognized earlier. Columbia Records was one of my very first employers. Frankly, I'm tired of standing on stage and looking at a stars ass. I have my own label, publishing company.
The internet has change the paradigm for major labels and most are not doing as well as they make out.

Music and art has changed before and it will again.

33. It is not an offer...
...I am not representing myself as an recruiter from NARAS, but I can imagine where you may get that impression...

...it is more of a challenge.

I am an independent musician who would like to see organizations, such as NARAS, move in a more small "D" democratic, indie label direction, as opposed to corporate, or Christian, or any other narrow minded kinda thing. But that ain't gonna happen as long as those who are qualified refuse to participate.

IMO, Music doesn't "change." It evolves, filtered through time. Stuff that people thought was great thirty years ago, and which may have won a Grammy, is now long forgotten, while other artists who never came to into the light of attention in their day are now revered, never having even once been "up for a Grammy."

IMO, The Grammys are:

Corporate.

Overrated in ultimate historical significance.

A snapshot of the General Pop Culture, for better or worse.

Regardless of all that, I'm a voting member, and I exercise my voting rights (voting not only for grammy award recipients, but local chapter board members and etc), to try and move the organization in a more positive direction.

Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 12:19 AM by GReedDiamond
...you gave up. I will never give up.

Truth is, you cannot back up your claims with the credits needed to qualify as a voting member of NARAS, so you are capable of only complaining about something you are not qualified to complain about, or you have willfully chosen not to be a part of.

I think we all know that being present at the "original broadcast in 1971" does not qualify you.

To Repeat: ANYONE CAN JOIN THE RECORDING ACADEMY, and vote to move it in whatever direction they would prefer, as long as they have a fairly low threshold of qualifying credits that can be documented upon application.

Put up or shut up.

On Edit: If you detest the Recording Academy as much as you claim to, and you also claim to be a member, that means you continue to pay the annual $100 membership fee, regardless of your objection to the Academy's basic existence, correct? Why would you do that?
