I assume they have the same problem they have in the justice department, that "nonpolitical" career positions were filled with ideologues and Bush loyalists. I think it would be hard to purge them legally, but if you could identify them and reassign them to non-critical areas, that might be just as effective. That would take time, though...

For generations, the sum total of political action within the active military began and ended with the ballot box. Anyone can vote however they please, but active duty military did not engage in political activities. The very good reason for this was that the presidential candidate you are campaigning against one day may be giving you your orders the next.

International policy is decided by civilians. The military's mission is to carry out that policy. Any military officer who wants to create policy MUST resign from the military and go into politics.

"Neocons in the military" should rightfully be a non-operative phrase.
