2. Actually, while that may seem glib to some, it's true, IMHO

They know they're not as hard core as their bosses, and they are generally soft-bellied well-paid talking heads who count on their 'credibility' to make a paycheck. If they show any affinity at all to a liberal cause, the right wing echo chamber points their collective finger at them and threaten their 'credibility', hence their livelihood and status among their peers. And there are no consequences for tilting to the right, so of course they are liberal, and they present themselves as fair and balanced by compensating with a rightward tilt in their 'journalism' and presentation.

3. If they are liberal at all, they are social liberals

while remaining fiscal conservatives. They may personally support choice, drug legalization, gay rights, etc., but their financial sentiments tend to fall in line with those of their corporate overlords. To Corporate Republicans, abortion and gay issues matter only insofar as they serve as means of controlling the rabble.
