Way To Go Subway
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sportsprose/2009/02/subway_accepts_michael_phelp.html

Subway accepts Michael Phelps' apology, wants him to make them some bread
By Kyle Koster on February 7, 2009 2:15 PM

It's been a pretty rough week for former American golden boy Michael Phelps. Photographic evidenced that seemed to show him enjoying the business end of a bong surfaced, he apologized, was punished and began to see his endorsement dollars dissipate.

But all is not lost for Mr. Phelps. Sandwich juggernaut Subway has announced they're sticking by the swimming star.
"Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior," Subway, which specializes in sandwiches, said in a statement.
"Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans."

4. In a way, they're just pandering to the evening stoner crowd...
Gotta get a one up on everyone else in the fast food biz somehow. A win-win for them and Phelps. Phelps' endorsement could easily match the weird-head Jack for appeal in certain audiences...

:)

27. Exactly what I thought.
Subway knows who eats fast food, and lots of it. Or maybe they just realize how incredibly stupid it is that pot is illegal to begin with. Either way, WTG Subway!

11. Twice a month, we buy almost 3 days worth of Subway for half the cost
of less than 2 days' worth of pizza. It's our big treat twice a month and it's worth every penny. And if you don't believe that those sandwiches are just as delicious after 2 days tightly wrapped in the fridge as they are fresh out of the store, that's your loss.

9 Grain sub rolls FTW!! :woohoo:

My husband had the same problem until he realized it was a problem with iceberg lettuce. He now avoids it on all sandwiches, salads etc and the problem is solved.

14. Uh-oh. They're preaching. People who have done lesser things have been given far more in terms of
unjust treatment.

And some do nothing and get nasty treatment too.

I've forgiven others for their disappointing acts too. And I'm just a cynical gen X'er anyway.

15. If nothing else the latest campaign has forced them out of price disparity
A couple of years ago I noticed that Subway charged a dollar more for the same sandwich at the store near my house as they did at the store near my work. I did a little research and found that yes, the prices were higher in the poor areas than in the more affluent. No doubt to make up for the perceived greater likelihood of a dark-skinned person committing a holdup.

I wrote a letter to the company and got some bullshit reply about how all the stores are independently owned franchises and could set their own prices, yadda, yadda.

Haven't been near a Subway since.

48. I think you're jumping to conclusions
It's a big jump to say that the only reason the sandwiches are more expensive near your house compared to near your work is fear of a holdup, or even because of the neighborhood. My guess is that near your work, there are probably more offices, and thus there are more dining options for lunch and they need to slash prices to stay competitive. Also, they can probably make up the difference on volume.

Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 03:48 PM by Beregond2
Here is a guy who has lived a life of discipline and self-denial beyond imagining. If he wants to fire-up a doob to relax, who the fuck cares? If he had gotten faced on booze no one would have said a word, which is infinitely more unhealthy and dangerous.

Hypocrisy, thy name is America.

23. Here's a link to the SUBWAY form where you can give them your appreciation:
http://www.subway.com/Applications/CustService/frmCustomerService.aspx

I just did:

Hey, thanks for treating Michael Phelps with dignity. I'm 62 years old and have been smoking pot off and on since I was 19 years old (1967). NO BIG DEAL. It should have been made legal for adults a LONG time ago. Thanks for not buying into or encouraging the fake "drug war" hype. By comparison, I'm boycotting Kellogg and all their products. If millions of Americans put their foot down and said enough is enough, all this "pot is bad" BS would be over with already! Anyway, thanks again!! I'm going to go buy myself a SUBWAY ;-)

Thank you, thank you Subway for not jumping on the "let's crucify Phelps" hysteria bandwagon. I have one of your great sandwich places across the street, and now I'm going to buy even more there, due to your sane and humane response to the Phelps non-sense.

I also love your choc. chip cookies, so there's that too.

Six-inch veggie delite sandwich (with low-fat honey-mustard dressing) ... and I get a side of yogurt with it. They offer yogurt, raisins and apple slices as sides. You can have a very healthy meal at Subway, and the quality is pretty consistent from store to store. The one near the local college offers a discount to students and faculty/staff, to boot!
