Poll question: Do you watch tv?

I gave up cable for financial reasons (I stopped paying and they cut me off, huh, go figure), and while I missed it for the first few weeks, I find myself not caring about anything on tv. I catch some progressive radio and I of course check the web for news.

How many of you are also without tv and have found the peace that comes from cutting the clutter and BS from your life that only tv brings?

1. I have my pet shows and leave it on when I'm falling asleep (usually on ESPN)

If I don't leave it on with the volume down very low to distract me I start thinking. And when I start thinking, I can't fall asleep.

2. I have a friend who also got rid of her TV several years ago.

3. Give me a reason to dump mine.

The few shows I do care for have even a small amount of intellectual depth. So anything made after 2000 is whittled down to 2 or 3 series. :(

4. In Sept of 1984 I moved into an apartment

without a TV. I pretty much did not watch any TV except for a little bit for research purposes and some MTV (the late night new music show in the early 90's) until about 3 or 4 years ago when I started watching the Daily Show and then the Colbert Report. Those are still all I watch. It just doesn't occur to me to watch TV. I would miss the two shows I watch but if they went off the air, I wouldn't find something to replace them. I occasionally watch videos of TV shows when they are posted here at DU.

I don't watch 30 minutes of TV a day (not even if you averaged all of my television viewing); however, every now and again there is a television show or movie that I watch and enjoy.

7. I Got Out of the Habit During the Writer's Strike, And Haven't Really Picked It Up Again.

Apart from the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and football, I don't watch. I'm not a TV snob by any means, I just find I'm spending all the time I used to spend watching TV on my computer now...with just as little intellectual stimulation, I might add.

8. Some people are so hooked on the TV drug it is frightening

Schoolmate to my kid had both of his parents lose their jobs within a couple of weeks of each other. Guess what the reaction was for both of them?

Daddy went out and bought a 42 inch television on credit. And Mommy went out and had her hair and nails done the same day. :wow:

9. Absolutely love crime shows.. Dexter,The Closer,The Mentalist,

Damages, etc.

I really enjoy some TV shows but it NEVER goes on before 7PM.

but my sig. other's an addict and insists we watch over dinner every day; plus we watch The Daily Show, which I do love.

I found I got twice as much done with no tv in the house.

Unfortunately, the internettes have taken tv's place, for me.

13. I turn on C-Span every morning at 7:00am

and it stays on all day, until the news programs later in the eveining. If I'm in the house and in the room I see it, if something catches my eye I might sit down and watch. I can see it from here and the same thing applies. Oh, my wife switches to Jeopardy at 7:00, she can't help herself.

15. I don't have one in the house. The few times

in the last few years I have watched TV it has been amazing how full of nothing it is. I might consider it if there were a la carte cable, but the packages seem to require you to have a bunch of bullshit like religion and the knife channel. I waste plenty of time on the internet.

I had hoped to get over my addiction to political news after the inauguration, but it didn't happen.
(For those who have never heard the term "having a five o'clock Jones" refers to having to meet your dealer for a fix.)

What I do actively watch are science shows, home and garden stuff, etc. after dinner.

NCAA football/basketball. I have a couple shows I try not to miss (The Office, Numb3rs, Law & Order) but I wouldn't really miss them and I could always pull them from the network websites anyway.

24. no TV antenna, only Netflix

I found when I had a TV antenna, we watched a lot of stupid shit just because it was there.

Now I don't miss it and feel very grateful that my children haven't been exposed to all the idiocy on TV these days, especially the commercials. Whenever I go to hotel or something and see what is on, it takes me days to get over what our culture has become. We are closer to idiocracy than I ever thought possible.

If that often. Haven't paid for cable in years, and will probably get no reception at all when this digital switchover is completed. I'm considering getting rid of the TV and putting another fishtank in that space, but I do like having the big screen available for watching DVDs now and again.

So, how do I answer? I currently have nothing more than a hand held portable analog tv (which will shortly be worthless), so no, tv is not a major part of my life, but I do enjoy occasional streaming and DVDs on laptop or my LCD.

Always been a big reader anyway but used to be somewhat of a TV junkie
Tend to pick and choose the TV shows for the last few years and the TV in the bedroom has probably not been on in six months
I'm thinking, though, that I may be missing some interesting stuff on PBS, Travel or History Channels, etc because I don't check the Sunday TV supplement

reruns of cop shows and violence.
My wife loves any type of show in which things explode.

36. I tape Daily Show, Colbert Report, Super Jail, Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job and Code Geas.

I will usually watch a weeks worth of these shows in one or two sittings. Sometimes I just erase the Colbert Reports, the others I always watch. Daily Show, Colbert, and Code Geas are 30 minutes each, Super Jail and Tim & Eric are 15 minutes each. If I watch all of the Colberts that comes to about six hours of TV a week.

When Dexter comes back, I will watch that every week.

I sometimes watch a different show, such as Hard Ball or Simpsons.

...watch maybe 6 hours a week. Mostly NHL and the occasional documentary.
