Hey America !!! - Time Magazine Thinks You're Stupid !!!

And ironically, while containing an essay touting the benefits of teaching the bible in public schools, it warns of the hazards of a theocracy!

:banghead:

<snip>

Interesting. This week, Time's cover story is an essay arguing in favor of teaching the Bible in schools, which can be boiled down to this: "Of course the Bible should be taught in schools. Duh. It's religion that shouldn't be." On the cover of its international edition is a story that is less easily boiled down: "The Truth About Talibanistan," about the resurgence of the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan (and also, Pakistan), and how it's "the next battleground of the war on terrorism." The story is in the U.S. edition of the magazine but not on the American cover, presumably because Rick Stengel & co. think the Bible will do better newsstand (even though it is a singularly unattractive cover).

This episode echoes a similar decision made by the Newsweek brass in October when the international editions all ran a cover called "Losing Afghanistan: The Rise of Jihadistan " about the resurgence of the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan (and also, Pakistan), and how it's a place from which "Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups hatch the next 9/11." The American cover? An exclusive cover shot and story on Annie Leibovitz entitled "My Life In Pictures" (which was also controversial for whitewashing her life as a lesbian); presumably Jon Meacham & co. thought it would do better on the newsstand.

2. Maybe because "we" are.
They probably changed the covers because they knew Americans wouldn't buy it.

While, I agree, that our media sucks and plays down to the lowest common denominator and is corporately-owned to our detriment, we mustn't forget to blame our populace for demanding the tripe that DOES get printed.

Afterall, American IDLE trumps any news show on TV and The National Enquirer outsells any other weekly magazine, including the two in your subject line.

Why is this?

Time and Newsweek.

Sorry - I meant OP, not subject line.

Sometimes the articles are actually pretty good, but it is so pandering of them to do that and the Talibanistan article is much more significant.

B-b-but Afghanistan was a great victory for the Rumsfeld doctrine!
We can't go around contradicting that on the cover of freakin' Time, for God's sake! Kkkarl might get upset!

And hey, I'm all for teaching the Bible in public school--as long as it's in a philosophy of religions class, and taught along with all of the other founding texts of major world religions by a qualified, unbiased teacher.

21. What they are doing
is manufacturing stupidity.

In the context of the OP Time magazine is off the hook as some innocent agent and "America", meaning the people that reside within that construct, are the dolts who need to shape up and get an understanding. What's omitted is the corruptive powers of Time magazine and how their manipulations create the "Stupid American."

Fuck Time magazine.

25. The Bible being taught as literature is not going

to lead to a theocracy. I would assume that's what the article refers to. The courts aren't going to allow the Bible to be taught in a religious context in public schools, unless it's in the context of a comparative religions course.

33. Time magazine has always been a CIA controled rag
Their owner, Luce, was a CIA propagandist. The objective has always been to print propaganda in Time, not news. Of course that's true of most publications today, and most TV news, radio news...
