It would be nice to think it is because they are no longer sheep but the article in the Salt Lake Tribute this morning cites a speech by the church president Hinckley saying war is bad (in general, he didn't mention Iraq) and:

The month after Hinckley's speech, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. - one of the more prominent politicians who are LDS members - returned from Iraq with an unfavorable report about the chaos he saw in the war-torn nation's capital city.
"The security situation is Baghdad is out of hand," said Huntsman, who enjoys wide popularity among Utahns. "I am less optimistic about a successful outcome."

Whatever the reason, it's good news...especially for those of us who live here and work with Mormons. On balance they are decent people but they don't very often stray from church teachings and church leadership is always old white men. Odd how yesterday's rebels become today's reactionaries.

3. Regardless of how they feel about the occupation of Iraq...
Utah's Mormons will still vote Republican, en mass.

5. no, Mormons will vote how they church tells 'em to
if the old white guys tell 'em to vote dem, they will. And if the church thinks it will do them good (image and/or money) they will do it.

Mormon politicians from Utah are a bad example but remember Reid is a Mormon and Smith (of Oregon) is too. While Smith is a republican, he's against the war and not rabid. Smith is anti war because he needs to be to get reelected. Mormons care more/as much about acceptance as anything else. If they think they need to be dem to be accepted, they will be.
