2. Are you their teacher? If so, you have the opportunity to (a) educate or (b) see that they cannot
spread their ignorance to others.

8. Ask your student if businesses seek payment for their goods or services.
That's what taxes are - payment for what is rendered by others.

9. If a business was failing it probably didn't have any income so it wouldn't be paying income tax.
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 03:25 PM by county worker
They would not be paying sales tax on the things they buy for resale since that tax is passed on to the end user. They would pay social security and medicare tax on their employees and workers comp which is insurance not a tax. But since most failing businesses are laying people off they are also cutting their tax burden along with the payroll.

Just what tax is causing them to fail?

10. On Sunday, a wingnut told me the reason jobs were being offshored is because of taxes
I said, "No, it's because of cheaper labor."

The wingnut said, "OK, cheaper labor AND taxes".

Someone else at the table told the wingnut, "Well, the company I work for hasn't paid taxes, yet has offshored lots of jobs."

The wingnut just sat there.

11. I keep telling this kid that the reason companies
hire expensive tax lawyers is to find ways around paying taxes

he got all bowed up and started spouting that "NO!!!11 Businesses pay the majority of taxes in society!!111. Millions of dollars in taxes!!!111"

also overheard him tell someone that his daddy was going to get him a job with his company so he's pretty much "hooked up" :eyes:

15. I am so sorry you have to deal with ignernt ungreatful lil snots
nt
I might be giving away my age, but we were taught to at least LISTEN to the person at the head of the class before spouting uncouth disrespect.
This was sometimes backed up with a board about 30 inches long with a handle carved out of one end and it was applied to the gluteus with force directly proportionate to said disrespect.

18. the reason business are failing is that there is no business
I've got clients, but they're all having trouble coming up with cash, and that hurts my business.

This student is obviously not running a business of his own.

19. please explain that...
...when you have no income or no profits, you don't have any taxes due. Profits often require revenues, so no revenue usually means no profits. No spending, no revenues. its axiomatic.

23. How sad.
Of course with GOPer/Libertarians (same thing, I know) once that "obstacle" is removed they will slip down the slope to blaming the "high cost" of employees.

And once that "obstacle" is removed, they'll move on to blaming something else.

24. May I invite you (and everyone in your thread) ...
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 05:10 PM by ColbertWatcher
... to come and have some fun with something I've been struggling with for a while?

I started a page on the Truthiness Encyclopedia called "The Economy Primer" (http://www.wikiality.com/The_Economy/Primer ).

It's basically supposed to be a satirical lesson on how the economy works (in picture form, but words can be added too).

Since it's on a wiki you can add almost anything you want.

And, I have a whole slew of icons already on the page, such as:

icons for people, for freepers and for Limpballs himself:

(I've decided to temporarily separate the text part from the graphic part, but they can be consolidated when everyone is ready)

Come on over and if you need more images added, let me know.
