the timing is obvious, but PETA's protest of this is horrible. "Pure breed" dog shows bother me only for one reason: The working dogs are often bred for show, and in this case they lose their quality of loving and working with humans.

I love working dogs, and I have to admit that I love adopting them as companions because they are smart. When I adopted Daisy (a mix) from a kennel, it was because I assumed she would be smart because of her working dog heritage. Huck--a purebred, but certainly not a show dog--attracted me in the same way. His breed was a working dog for hundreds of years. Working dogs have an innate bond with humans.

To imply that dog breeders of weims, goldens, or any other breeds are "master race" breeders is ridiculous. Those that breed dogs only for profit and looks *are* awful breeders, but PETA has made a big mistake in its assumptions.

This protest was stupid, but the AKC is horrible. They knowingly register puppy mill dogs (that's where they make most of their money) and absolutely destroy breeds in the name of looks.

"Dog Wars" is a good book about the AKC. It mostly centers on Border Collies, but it touches on other breeds. The AKC hasn't even recognized Border Collies for 20 years, and the AKC Border Collie is already pretty much an entirely different breed than the working Border Collie.

ALL the dogs are judged on appearance and NOT function or personality.

The toy group, the herding group, the terrier group, the working group, the hound group, the sporting group... ALL the dogs are judged on looks alone.

Saying that some dogs are "pure" and other dogs are not "pure" leads to inbreeding. Inbreeding leads to passing on flaws generation after generation.

I think ultimately the fixation on "purebred" dogs leads to genetic weakness and miserable dogs.

And there IS a connection between the human eugenics movement and the "purebred" dog movement.

The other day I saw a show about the shih tzu. At one time there were only 14 shih tzus in the world, and all existing shih tzus are descended from those same 14 dogs. If that was any other species, the species would be considered critically endangered. But for dogs that's okay?

She was bought from a respectable AKC breeder, not to be a sport or work dog, but to be a family pet. The lady breeds these dogs when she has enough people that are going to buy them and then donates everything to local shelters and rescues.

I'm sorry but PETA needs to go after Puppy Mills and other criminal breeders, rather than going after people looking for a specific breeds to fit their circumstances. Otherwise, it diminishes the breed. Breeding just to be a family pet isn't a good reason to breed a dog. Dogs should be bred for their purpose.

There are breeds of dogs bred specifically to be companions, but Labs aren't one of them. If a Lab can't prove itself in the field, it should NEVER be bred. Just like if German Shepherds can't prove themselves in herding or protection work, they should NEVER be bred.

I'm not against owning dogs as family pets, but that's a piss poor reason to breed them. There's millions of dogs dying out there that would make great family pets.
