Foreign Telemarketers Using Canada's Do-Not-Call List as a List of Verified Names to Call


Canada's do-not-call registry, which millions of people signed up for in the hope of getting some relief from phone sales people, has backfired with those on the list being exposed to even more telemarketers.

The list is made available to companies for a negligible fee so they know who not to call but some companies are using it as a call list. Fines of up to $15,000 apply for misusing the list but enforcement is difficult as many call from overseas.

"That's just perfect for any telemarketer, because these are good names which they would otherwise have to pay money for to verify," said Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers' Association of Canada.

Foreign companies are not bound by US (and Canadian) laws about do-not-call lists so they use those lists to target your cell phone.
