"Demon car" under investigation
STAUNTON — If ever a car seemed possessed with a spirit of its own, Michael Chauncey witnessed it several days ago when his 2006 Cadillac was rammed repeatedly by a driverless Suzuki in the Wharf parking lot.
It was an attack perpetrated by a “demon car,” as Chauncey put it.
On the night of Jan. 30, Chauncey and his wife were pulling out of a parking space in the Johnson Street parking lot shortly after spending the evening at the Byers Street Bistro. That’s when Chauncey spotted a Suzuki car barreling down on his 2006 Cadillac STS.
“This thing came out of nowhere,” he said.
Chauncey shouted to his wife to brace herself. Suddenly, the Suzuki slammed into the passenger side of Chauncey’s car, rocking its two occupants to the point of disorientation.
But Chauncey’s troubles were just beginning.
The Suzuki continued to push against the Cadillac, Chauncey said, squealing its tires and burning rubber, sending smoke billowing into the air while it pressed against the passenger-side door as it continued to bully the Cadillac. Chauncey said he jumped out of his car to confront the driver. Yanking on the locked door to no avail, he looked inside. To his utter surprise the Suzuki was empty.
......
After the rogue Suzuki was finally reined in, Chauncey said the owner of the vehicle, who has not been charged in the incident, told him the Suzuki was started remotely from inside the restaurant.
