George Will declares that giving DC a Representative is like taking a figurative crap on the Constitution.
http://townhall.com/columnists/GeorgeWill/2009/02/05/the_unconstitutional_compromise Wyoming has a population just over a million people, and it has two Senators and a Representative (singular).
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/56000.htmlThe District of Columbia has just over half a million people and it has
no Congressional representation.
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/11000.htmlNote that DC pays more revenue per capita than any other state---almost 5 times as much federal revenue total as Wyoming and more than about half the other states. While this does not cover the federal spending in DC, I suspect if you factor in the tax revenues of the suburbs around DC, you would get a much higher number.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_tax_revenue_by_stateThe Colonies became the United States because taxation without representation was tyranny. Currently, DC is being taxed at a very high rate without the same representation afforded to citizens of other states. Does George Will believe that the American patriots had no right to rebel against King George? Does he believe that the U.S. is an illegal enterprise? Or does he accept that some laws outlive their original usefulness and are open to renegotiation?
If DC were a Republican enclave like Wyoming, they would have had two Senators to represent their cattle and coyotes long ago.
