VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police are investigating a stabbing that's left a little boy dead.

Sources confirm to 13News reporter/anchor Wayne Carter that the victim is five-year-old Joshua Hagerman and that he had been decapitated.

According to police, his father, Joseph Hagerman, 33, is charged with murder and felonious assault. He was arrested soon after police were called to the home on Sugar Creek Road late Tuesday morning.

Authorities also say his wife, the little boy's mother, was treated for serious lacerations and knife wounds on her hands.

Mr. Hagerman is being held without bond in the Va. Beach City Jail.

Hagerman, a night security guard for Virginia Beach Public Schools, has been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation, according to schools spokeswoman Eileen Cox.

He’s been employed with the city since August 29, 2001.

A father killed his young son and wounded his wife Tuesday inside his home in The Lakes neighborhood, police said.

In a jailhouse interview with WVEC-TV on Tuesday, Joseph Henry Hagerman III, 33, said he decapitated his son.

“If I didn’t take my son’s life, he would have lost his eternal salvation,” Hagerman said in the interview. “I know it’s a horrible thing.”

Hagerman, a night security guard, was charged with felonious assault and murder. He was jailed without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Facility.

Apparently he was mentally ill and had stopped taking his medication.

He killed his son because he wanted him to be "saved", OK.

But why did he...

Run for a while until confronted by police?
Fight with police?

If he was "saving" his son and was mentally ill, why did he run?

for mental illness usually implies there was a mental illness and when mentally ill people stop taking their medication for mental illness it has bad side effects. I'm not defending what he did in any way. I'm just trying to add more to the story.

It's just I find it irritating when monsters like him want to try and convince the world that they don't know what they what they were doing (And in this particular case, I think he realized what he did).

Hopefully, this little boy and his mother will get justice at the trial.
