Lobbying firms and trade associations have contributed thousands of dollars for lawmakers’ official portraits to hang in the halls of Congress.
According to lobbying disclosure records recently filed with the Senate, major corporations, business groups and lobbyists have donated to the U.S. Capitol Historical Society to finance paintings of prominent members of Congress — members who could sway legislation in their favor.
At least three House members have set up portrait fundraising committees — Reps. Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.), Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) and Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) — and have brought in tens of thousands of dollars over the past year, according to records.
Ethics watchdog groups say the portrait fundraising is another example of special interests in Washington trying to gain access to lawmakers.
